Tree care in Bel Air

Hillside estates shaped by fire rules

Bel Air was laid out in 1923 as large estate lots in the hills. In November 1961, a Santa Ana wind-driven fire destroyed 484 homes here. It led the City of Los Angeles to adopt some of the strictest brush clearance rules in the country. In January 2025, high winds brought down many trees across Bel Air's roads during the fires. Today, owners must keep dry growth and tree limbs cleared within 200 feet of their homes, and the fire department inspects every year.

The 1961 fire is why clearing here is so strict. Good tree care is part of meeting it.

Who governs tree work in Bel Air

City of Los Angeles

Bel Air has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The work

Bel Air's fire rules shape our pruning, brush clearance and removals

Supreme Tree Experts prunes, clears brush and removes trees in Bel Air, where clearance runs 200 feet from homes. With the fire department inspecting every year, Bel Air owners get ready with Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take down dead trees and approved removals on Bel Air's hillside estate lots. Oaks, western sycamores and California bay trees 4 inches across or more are protected. Removing one needs a Board of Public Works permit, which you apply for, and we flag those trees first.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune to the brush clearance rules while keeping each tree healthy. Within 200 feet of a home, trees over 18 feet can have no leaves within 6 feet of the ground. Smaller trees lose their lower third.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind stumps on steep hillside lots and clear the chips away. Within 30 feet of a building, wood chips must stay under 3 inches deep. We spread or haul the grindings to fit that limit.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We trim hanging dead fronds off palms before inspection season opens on May 1. From a lift set up on the drive, not the lawn, the crew also skins old frond bases. A clean trunk holds less dry material.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crew clears fallen trees 24/7, whether a trunk blocks your drive or lands on the house. In January 2025, high winds brought down many trees across the roads here. We open the drive first, then deal with the rest.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We visit on a schedule, since brush grows back fast on these slopes. Clearing may be needed more than once a year, and failing a second inspection adds a $758 fee. Regular visits keep your lot ready for the inspector.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower crowns with proper cuts so limbs stay 10 feet from chimneys and 5 feet above the roof. Those are fire code limits, checked by the fire department every year. The tree stays healthy while it meets them.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We keep a yearly plan for the large estate lots laid out here in 1923. On a declared red flag day, clearing work must stop and parking is banned on posted streets. We schedule every visit around those days.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shear and space native shrubs so they meet the fire code without being ripped out. Natives spaced 18 feet or more apart may stay if they are trimmed up by a third. A charged hose or extinguisher stays within 10 feet of the work.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan planting that suits a slope in the very high fire hazard zone. After a 1961 fire destroyed 484 homes here, the city adopted some of the strictest clearing laws in the country. We choose plants and spacing that work within them.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build terraces, low walls and paths that hold these slopes on a firm base. Walls and terraces already support many Bel Air hillsides, and new ones need to drain well behind them. We keep footings clear of protected tree roots.

Why Choose Us

What our Bel Air crew brings to protected natives and fire rules

Tree work goes wrong when it is rushed or under-equipped. We run our own 75-foot boom trucks, lift trucks, chippers and stump grinders, and every crew works under an ISA Certified Arborist — so the job gets done right the first time.

We hold California license #1002853 for both landscaping and tree and palm work, we are bonded, we carry general liability and every employee is on workers’ compensation.

  • ISA Certified Arborist

An arborist checks for protected natives and fire rules before any price is given.

  • Licensed, Bonded & Insured

Protected-tree permits in the City of Los Angeles go through the Board of Public Works. You apply; we do the work to the standard the permit sets, under license #1002853 (C-27 and C-61/D-49).

  • Southern California Since 1985

Bel Air's brush rules date back to the 1961 fire. Clearing undergrowth and limbs to codes like these has been part of our work since 1985.

  • Our Own Equipment

Our own boom trucks can reach trees from the road, which matters on narrow, winding streets with little room to park.

FAQ

Straight answers for Bel Air

6 questions about tree work in Bel Air, answered without the sales language. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

No. Clearing the hillside does not give you the right to remove a protected native. Oaks, western sycamores, Southern California black walnuts and California bay trees 4 inches across or more stay protected, even inside the 200-foot clearance zone. You can prune them up and clear the undergrowth beneath them. Removing one still needs a Board of Public Works permit.

Within 200 feet of your home, trees over 18 feet should have no leaves within 6 feet of the ground. Smaller trees lose their lower third. Keep limbs 10 feet from chimneys and 5 feet above the roof, and remove all dead trees. Inspections run May 1 to June 30.

Clearing cannot. On a declared red flag day, the Bel Air Association says that work must stop, and parking is banned on posted streets. We plan work around red flag days.

There is a $31 fee for failing the first inspection, and $758 more after a second failure. If the city's contractor then clears the lot, you pay the contractor's bill plus a $1,740 fee. Clearance may be needed more than once a year.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Winding hillside roads and fire-safety codes often shape the price more than the tree itself.

Yes, 24/7. In January 2025, many trees blew down across Bel Air's roads in high winds. Call 877-787-7363.
