Tree Service in Bell Canyon, CA
In this gated horse community in the Simi Hills, county rules protect oaks and sycamores. Tree service in Bell Canyon means trimming and removing trees with those rules in mind, and telling you when a permit may come first.
Tree care in Bell Canyon
A gated horse canyon with county-protected oaks
In Bell Canyon, Ventura County rules decide what you can cut on an oak or sycamore. Builders bought the land in 1967, and it was named in 1969 for homesteader Charles A. Bell. The equestrian center, designed by Cliff May, opened in 1968. Today about 1,946 people live in 677 homes on 3.64 square miles. Its 1992 ordinance protects oaks and sycamores 9.5 inches around at 4.5 feet up. In 2018 the Woolsey Fire forced a full evacuation, and homes on Hitching Post Lane and Flintlock Lane burned.
Measure the trunk before you pick up the saw. In this canyon, a permit may be needed first.

Protected oaks and burned trees: Bell Canyon trimming and stump work
Supreme Tree Experts trims oaks, removes burned trees and grinds stumps in Bell Canyon, where the county protects oaks. When a fire-hit tree or a big oak needs care, Bell Canyon residents lean on Supreme Tree Experts.
Tree Removal

We measure every oak and sycamore before any removal in Bell Canyon. Those 9.5 inches around or more at 4.5 feet up are protected, so a permit may apply. Other trees come down limb by limb, clear of homes and fences.
Tree Trimming & Pruning

Our trimmers keep cuts on protected oaks and sycamores light and spread over time. The rules call it major pruning when cuts pass 20 percent of the canopy or roots. Routine trims stay well under that line.
Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Fire-killed trees leave stumps near homes, drives and slopes, and we grind them below the soil. The Woolsey Fire forced a full evacuation here in November 2018, and homes on two lanes burned. Grinding clears the ground for replanting.
Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Dry fronds and frond bases near the eaves are fuel, so we clear both from each palm. A skinned trunk holds less dead fiber close to the house. Our lift truck comes through the gate and reaches the crown from the drive.
Emergency Tree Service

Day or night, we come out when a limb or tree lands on your home or drive. Fall winds sweep the hills around Bell Canyon, and an old oak limb can split without warning. We cut it free first, then clear the site.
Tree Maintenance

Bell Creek winds through the community, and trees along its banks get a yearly look. We check for rot, weak forks and dead wood near the water. Creek-side trees often lean toward the light and need their weight watched.
Tree Height Reduction

Crown reduction on a tall tree brings its height down with small, well-placed cuts. Any tree 90 inches around counts as a heritage tree under county rules. For those, we confirm what is allowed before lowering the crown.
Estate Tree Care

Bell Canyon has about 677 homes on 3.64 square miles, so most lots are large and wooded. Each property gets a yearly plan that covers every big tree on it. Our boom trucks and chippers come through the gate in one trip.
Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Riding trails run through this horse community, and shrubs along them need a firm trim. We shear hedges and cut back brush so trail edges on your lot stay clear for horses. Clippings go through the chipper.
Landscaping

Yard plans here are built for open country, with planting that fits the hills around it. The canyon is part of a wildlife corridor, so we keep new beds simple and native-friendly. Fire-safe spacing near the house comes first.
Hardscape

Patios, pool decks and walls are placed outside a protected tree's root zone. That zone runs 5 feet past the canopy edge and at least 15 feet from the trunk. Digging or grading inside it falls under the county ordinance.

The questions worth asking any Bell Canyon tree company

If its trunk is 9.5 inches around or more at 4.5 feet up, it likely is. In unincorporated Ventura County, all oaks and sycamores that size are protected. So is any tree 90 inches around, or one with a historical designation. Check with the Planning Division before cutting.
The rules treat cuts over 20 percent as major pruning. That means limbs over 20 percent of the trunk's girth, or more than 20 percent of the canopy or roots. Pruning past set limits falls under the ordinance, often with an arborist form. Ask the Planning Division if you are unsure.
Five feet past the edge of the canopy, and at least 15 feet from the trunk. Trenching, digging or grading in that zone falls under the ordinance too. Plan pools, walls and patios with it in mind. We lay out hardscape to stay clear of that zone.
It forced a total evacuation of the canyon in November 2018. CBS reported six homes burned on Hitching Post Lane and seven on Flintlock Lane. The fire started at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory on Nov. 8 and burned 96,949 acres before it was contained on Nov. 21.
