Tree care in Beverly Hills

Palm-lined streets and a fire zone in the hills

Beverly Hills was planned with one kind of tree on each street. The city looks after about 25,000 trees, and the Mexican fan palm is the most common. About 71% of the city's tree canopy is on private land. North of Sunset, the hills and canyons are a very high fire hazard zone, and in 2025 the state added about 324 more lots to it. In that zone, trees must stay back from roofs and chimneys, and dry palm fronds must be removed. The same fan palm that lines the streets is on the fire department's banned list for new planting there.

North of Sunset, a tree is also a wildfire question. Inspectors check every spring.

Who governs tree work in Beverly Hills

City of Beverly Hills

Tree work in Beverly Hills follows the city's own tree rules. Prior to the issuance of a tree removal permit, the Community Development Department may request that a report, concerning the subject tree, be submitted by a licensed arborist. No permit is required to remove an individual tree that is located outside the area between the house and any adjacent street, with the exception of trees located within an Urban Grove, which do require a tree removal permit. Heritage Tree: Any tree that has a trunk circumference of 48 inches or greater, measured at a height of four feet and six (4 feet to 6 inches) inches from the ground. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Fan palms first, then crowns and removals, in Beverly Hills

Supreme Tree Experts trims fan palms, lowers crowns and removes trees in Beverly Hills, a city of palm-lined streets. When dry fronds north of Sunset must come off for wildfire safety, owners there call Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take out most private trees on Beverly Hills lots with no permit needed. On a single-family lot, a protected tree between the house and the street does need one. That covers natives 24 inches around, heritage trees 48 inches around, and urban groves.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune to keep trees healthy, including pruning to open a view. General trimming that does not damage the tree needs no permit here. We leave the crown balanced and every cut clean, so the tree seals over well.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind stumps below the soil across the flats. On a fire-zone slope, a dead tree's stump may stay up to 3 feet tall to hold the soil. We tell you which approach fits your lot.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We cut dry, bearded fronds from palms, which the fire rules north of Sunset require. The Mexican fan palm is the city's most common street tree. From our lift, the crew skins trunks for the clean look these streets are known for.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

We answer 24/7 when Santa Ana winds drop a tree on a roof or across a drive. Those winds reach the hills and canyons here, sometimes overnight. We clear drives and roofs first, then haul the wood.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We check private trees each year for dead wood, pests and weak limbs. About 71% of the city's tree canopy grows on private land, so owners carry most of it. A yearly visit keeps yours healthy.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower and thin crowns to meet fire-zone spacing. Trees must stay 5 feet from the roof, or 10 for a wood roof, and 10 feet from a chimney. We also keep 10 feet between neighboring crowns.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We plan care for large estates in the hills and canyons, where inspections start on or after April 1. In 2025 the state added about 324 more lots to the very high fire hazard zone here. Our plan gets your trees ready before inspectors arrive.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shape the clipped hedges that frame many homes in the flats. The city was planned with one kind of tree on each street, and neat hedges suit that uniform look. We shear on a steady cycle.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

For hillside lots above Sunset, we plan planting within the fire zone limits. New landscaping of 2,500 square feet or more there needs a fuel modification plan. The fan palm is banned for new planting in that zone, so we choose from what is allowed.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build patios, walls and paths on firm bases, kept clear of big roots. The city trims the parkway tree, but you water it and clear its fallen leaves and fruit. So we set new paving where it is easy to sweep.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Beverly Hills tree company

6 of them, answered here for Beverly Hills. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Most private trees do not need one. On a single-family lot, a permit is needed for a protected tree between the house and the street: a native tree 24 inches around or more, a heritage tree 48 inches around or more, or an urban grove. The application needs a certified arborist report. Call Community Development at (310) 285-1141.

Yes. General trimming or pruning that does not damage the tree needs no permit, including pruning for a view. Removing a protected tree for a view of the basin is also one of the reasons the city can approve over the counter.

In the very high fire hazard zone, keep trees 5 feet from the roof (10 feet for a wood roof) and 10 feet from chimneys. Keep 10 feet between tree crowns and 14 feet of clearance over the street. Remove dead wood and dry palm fronds. Inspections start on or after April 1.

The city trims it and may remove and replace it. You water it and clear fallen leaves and fruit. The city waters a new tree for its first year, then that job passes to you.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Tall palms and hazard-zone rules north of Sunset shape most prices here.

Yes, 24/7. Santa Ana winds reach the hills and canyons, sometimes overnight. Call 877-787-7363.
