Tree care in Carson

Rancho land, oil fields and a young city

Carson is one of LA County's younger cities, built on some of its oldest ranch land. The land was part of a Spanish grant from 1784. The city takes its name from George Henry Carson, who married into the Dominguez family in 1857 and ran the rancho. Oil drilling began at Dominguez Hill in 1921. Carson became a city on February 20, 1968, and today about 95,500 people live on 19 square miles. It is home to CSU Dominguez Hills. The city's tree page counts more than 18,000 city trees, sorted into streets, parks and residential blocks.

In Carson, every city-owned tree is on a map — and on a three-year rotation.

Who governs tree work in Carson

City of Carson

Tree work in Carson follows the city's own tree rules. With an urban forest of over 18,000 trees in Carson, the very important job of protecting it is carried out by the Public Works Section's Urban Forestry Program. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Carson maps its city trees; we remove, prune and grind stumps on yours

Supreme Tree Experts removes, prunes and grinds stumps on private Carson lots, next to more than 18,000 city trees. Trees off the city's tree map are your call, and Carson owners make it with Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

Dead, leaning or oversized yard trees are felled limb by limb and lowered on rope. A street tree may be a mapped city tree, so call Public Works at (310) 830-7600 before anyone cuts. Private trees are yours to decide.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Clean cuts back to strong branches are how our crews trim Carson yard trees. City trees here are worked on a three-year rotation, but yours keep no such calendar. We set a pruning cycle that fits each tree's growth.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Stumps are ground below grade so a lawn, bed or new tree can take the spot. The city turns its own removed trees into wood chips that hold back weeds. Our chippers do the same with your brush, so nothing leaves as a loose pile.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

Tall yard palms lose their brown fronds and flower stalks to our saws, and each trunk gets skinned clean. Across 19 square miles of homes and business lots, palms often stand over drives and parking. Our lift truck takes the crew up safely.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Storm-toppled and split trees on private Carson lots get a 24/7 response from our crew. The city's own forest plan names heat, floods and storms as risks here. When a tree on your lot gives way, call us at any hour.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Maintenance visits look at each yard tree for weak limbs, pests and early disease. A dry, stressed tree shows it in thin leaves and dead twigs first. Catching that early keeps a small problem from turning into a removal.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

Crown reduction lowers a tall tree by cutting back to side branches, keeping as much shade as possible. Shortening a tree this way costs less of its leaf cover than removal. We never top, since topped trees regrow weak and crowded.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

Larger lots with many trees get a written list, ranked by risk and season. The city maps every tree it owns, and a clear map of yours helps just as much. You see each tree, its needs and its timing before any work is booked.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Hedges, screens and foundation shrubs are sheared on a steady cycle to hold a clean line. Regular light shearing keeps growth dense and stops a hedge from going bare inside. We haul every clipping away.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

New yard planting is placed to shade walls, windows and paving on hot afternoons. With federal funding, Carson is planning an urban forest master plan to grow its canopy for heat relief. Well-placed trees in private yards add to that shade.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

Patios and walks are built to shed water fast and stay level for years. We grade each surface away from the house and set drains where runoff collects. New paving is kept clear of big roots so it doesn't crack.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Carson tree company

6 of them, answered here for Carson. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Ask Public Works first. Carson's Urban Forestry Program maps and maintains city-owned trees along streets, in parks and in residential areas. If the tree out front is one of them, the city's crew handles it. Call (310) 830-7600, Monday to Thursday, before anyone cuts.

Bigger than many expect. The city's tree page lists a tree supervisor, a senior tree trimmer, four assistant trimmers, an equipment operator and eight full-time contract staff, on a budget of about $733,000 a year. Every city-owned tree is mapped, and each category is worked on a three-year rotation.

They become wood chips. The city turns removed trees into chips and spreads them around town as ground cover that helps hold back weeds. Our own chippers do the same job on your brush, so branches leave your yard as chips, not piles.

It is planning to. With federal Inflation Reduction Act funding, Public Works will develop an Urban Forest Master Plan. The goal is more tree canopy, for relief from heat, resilience to floods and storms, and cleaner air. For now, the city's tree page describes a three-year rotation for the trees it has.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Across 19 square miles of homes and industry, where the tree stands and how the crew reaches it shape the cost.

Yes, 24/7. The city's own forest plan names heat, floods and storms as risks — and when a tree on your lot gives way, call us. Call 877-787-7363.
