Tree care in Chatsworth

Olives, oaks and rock

Chatsworth's oldest planted trees are 76 olives on Lassen Street, set out in the late 1800s and named a city monument in 1967. The town dates to 1888, when George R. Crow mapped a tract called Chatsworth Park. Rock is everywhere. The Stoney Point outcrops are a monument too, and the two Chatsworth parks hold more than 120 acres of the rocky Simi Hills. The 1,325-acre Chatsworth Nature Preserve keeps oak woodland and savanna on a former reservoir. Fire comes off these hills. In 1970 the Clampitt Fire burned the Spahn Ranch movie sets here.

Chatsworth's olives have lasted since the 1800s. The right care helps your trees last too.

Who governs tree work in Chatsworth

City of Los Angeles

Chatsworth has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Around barns and bridle paths: Chatsworth pruning and removals

Supreme Tree Experts prunes olives, removes trees near barns and shears shrubs by bridle paths in Chatsworth. When fire or wind leaves a limb over the barn, Chatsworth horse owners phone Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take down trees on horse properties and hillside lots, dropping them in sections away from barns, corrals and fences. Before we start, we agree where the horses stay while wood comes down. Our haulers then take the wood away.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune old olives and shade trees with light cuts that respect their age. The 76 Lassen Street olives date to the late 1800s, and only the city prunes them. Yard olives get the same patient care from us.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind out stumps on Chatsworth lots and stop where the rock begins. Rocky ground here can hide loose boulders just under the roots. The grindings go back in the hole or leave with our haulers.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We cut dry fronds and seed stalks from palms by homes and barns before fire season. Summer highs here often reach 90 to 100 degrees, which bakes old fronds dry. Skinning then takes the loose frond bases off the trunk.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Day or night, we respond when fire or wind throws a tree onto a home, barn or fence. In 2005, a fire in the Santa Susana Mountains northwest of Chatsworth burned 24,175 acres. We clear what fell and make the rest safe.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We inspect trees near barns and paddocks after every big storm, looking for cracked limbs and loose roots. Some leaves and clippings can make horses sick. We name what grows by the paddock so you know what to keep clear.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We reduce tall trees near the rocky hills with cuts back to strong limbs, never by topping. Wind off the Santa Susana Mountains hits tall crowns hardest here. A lower, lighter crown gives it less to push on.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We plan the care of each tree on a Chatsworth horse property, from paddock shade to trail edges. Local parks carry bridle paths, and riders need limbs kept high overhead. We raise branches over your trails and keep fallen wood out of the paddock.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shear hedges and cut back brushy shrubs so they sit apart from walls and eaves. Big fires have come off these hills more than once, including the 1970 Clampitt Fire. Gaps between shrubs and the house help in fire season.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan dry-garden planting for yards here, keeping summer water away from native oaks. The 1,325-acre Chatsworth Nature Preserve shows how oak woodland and savanna grow here when left alone. We take our planting cues from it.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build stone walls, steps and paths that fit a rocky yard and let water drain away. Rock shapes the land here, from the Stoney Point outcrops to the rocky parks in the hills. We keep footings clear of big tree roots.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Chatsworth tree company

6 of them, answered here for Chatsworth. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Yes. They are Historic-Cultural Monument No. 49. The city listed the 76 mature olives on May 10, 1967. They line both sides of Lassen Street and were planted in the late 19th century. Monument street trees can't be pruned without written approval from the city's Urban Forestry Division, so leave them to the city.

A 1,325-acre open space on the old Chatsworth Reservoir. The reservoir went into service in 1919 and was drained in 1972. Today the land holds oak woodland, savanna, streamside areas and vernal pools. LADWP opens the fenced core to the public once a year, on Earth Day. It shows how native oaks grow here when left alone.

Big fires have come through more than once. The Clampitt Fire in September 1970 destroyed the Spahn Ranch movie sets here. On September 28, 2005, another fire started in the Santa Susana Mountains northwest of Chatsworth and burned 24,175 acres. Keep dead wood, dry fronds and brush piles away from homes and barns.

Keep limbs high over trails and paddocks, and fallen wood away from animals. Chatsworth parks carry bridle paths, and the old Palomino Horse Association headquarters on Devonshire Street is a city monument. Check trees near barns after every storm. Some leaves and clippings can make horses sick, so have an arborist name what grows by the paddock.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Rocky ground, horse properties and long drives affect how gear gets in, and that shapes most prices here.

Yes, 24/7. Fire and wind off the Santa Susana Mountains can bring trees down onto homes and barns at any hour. Call 877-787-7363.
