Tree care in Granada Hills

Deodars, orchards and the hills behind

Granada Hills has one of the valley's best-known rows of trees, and it is a city landmark. More than 100 deodar cedars stand along eight blocks of White Oak Avenue. They were planted in the early 1930s under John Orcutt, who ran the Sunshine Ranch dairy and citrus orchard. The city named them a landmark on August 3, 1966, and they later framed the flying bicycles in E.T. The town itself was founded in 1926. Behind it, O'Melveny Park covers 672 acres of chaparral and oak woodland.

Who governs tree work in Granada Hills

City of Los Angeles

Granada Hills has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The list

Granada Hills slopes and flat roofs: removals, pruning, palm work

Supreme Tree Experts removes hillside trees, clears limbs off flat roofs and trims palms across Granada Hills. Near the O'Melveny Park brush, Granada Hills owners clear dry palm fronds with Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We cut down dead and unwanted trees here, lowering heavy pieces by rope when a slope sits below. Many lots climb toward the Santa Susana Mountains, so a big tree often stands above the house. Every piece goes through our chipper or onto our hauler.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune yard trees on Granada Hills lots with thinning cuts that keep their form. The deodar cedars along White Oak Avenue are a city landmark, and pruning them needs city approval. We look after the trees on your own lot.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind out old orchard stumps and roots that still turn up in yards. Tracts here were built over Sunshine Ranch orchard ground, once planted with apricots and citrus. Clearing the roots frees the spot for new planting.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We remove dead fronds and seed pods from yard palms before the dry months arrive. In January 2025, the Archer Fire burned 19 acres in O'Melveny Park before crews stopped it. Skinning the trunk of its old frond stubs takes away more of that dry fuel.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crews come out 24/7 when a storm or quake drops a tree on a Granada Hills home or drive. In 1994, broken mains flooded Balboa Boulevard, and soaked, shaken soil can loosen roots. We make a tipped tree safe and clear it.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We check yard trees each year for new lean, cracked soil at the base and weak limbs. After a strong quake, soil that has lifted or split around a trunk is a warning sign. Trees planted with the postwar tracts are now old enough to need watching.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower tall trees on sloped lots with cuts back to sturdy limbs, keeping the tree's shape. On a slope, one tall crown can shade the yard below or hang over a neighbor's roof. Our own 75-ft boom trucks work from the street, off the slope.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We look after every tree on larger foothill lots, where oaks, pines and old fruit trees often share the ground. One plan sets what each tree needs and when. Old fruit trees can stay healthy with pruning, or come out when they fail.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shape hedges and shrubs with crisp, simple lines that suit the mid-century homes common here. Flat roofs and wide glass look best when plants sit low and clear. We keep growth off windows and away from the eaves.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan planting and watering for dry, sloped Granada Hills yards, with trees placed for shade. Behind the town, O'Melveny Park holds 672 acres of chaparral and oak woodland. We keep new plantings spaced and watered with that brush edge in mind.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build steps, paths and low retaining walls for sloped yards, set on a firm base. Footings go in clear of big roots, so neither the wall nor the tree fails. We plan drainage so winter rain runs off instead of undercutting the work.

Our Process

How we work in Granada Hills, before anything is cut

  1. 01.

    Slope and tree check

An arborist looks at the tree, the slope and what sits below it. Landmark street trees get flagged right away.

    • Landmark trees flagged
    • Fall zone mapped
  2. 02.

    Your plan in writing

You get a clear list of cuts. Tall trees get lowered, not topped, and roofs and glass get the space they need.

    • No topping
    • Roof clearance set
  3. 03.

    Rope, lower, chip

The crew lowers limbs by rope down the slope, chips them at the truck and clears the yard.

    • Rigged over the house
    • Brush gone same day
Why Choose Us

Tree work goes wrong when it is rushed or under-equipped. We run our own 75-foot boom trucks, lift trucks, chippers and stump grinders, and every crew works under an ISA Certified Arborist — so the job gets done right the first time.

We hold California license #1002853 for both landscaping and tree and palm work, we are bonded, we carry general liability and every employee is on workers’ compensation.

  • ISA Certified Arborist

An arborist visits at no cost. If your tree is one of the White Oak Avenue deodars, we tell you it is a city landmark before anything else.

  • Licensed, Bonded & Insured

Granada Hills lots run up toward the Santa Susana Mountains. Our California license #1002853 covers tree work (C-61/D-49) and landscaping (C-27); we are bonded, and every worker is insured.

  • Southern California Since 1985

Our family started this company in 1985, well after the Sunshine Ranch orchards gave way to homes, but in time to see those yard trees grow up.

  • Our Own Equipment

Our own 75-foot boom trucks work from the street on steep lots, so gear stays off the slope and off the roots.

FAQ

Before you book in Granada Hills

6 questions worth having answered before you book tree work in Granada Hills. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Not on your own. The deodars on White Oak Avenue, from San Fernando Mission Boulevard to San Jose Street, are a Historic-Cultural Monument. They are city street trees, and pruning a landmark tree needs written approval from the city's Urban Forestry Division. Call the city first. We can care for the trees on your own lot.

Granada Hills was farm land first. The Sunshine Ranch grew apricots, oranges and walnuts, and later tracts were built over orchard ground. Near the hills, O'Melveny Park still has a grapefruit grove by its entrance. Old fruit trees can be kept healthy with pruning, or taken out and the stump ground if they are failing.

Look at the roots, the lean and the ground around the trunk. In 1994, broken gas and water mains on Balboa Boulevard flooded the street, and homes burned. Shaking and soaked soil can loosen roots. If a tree now leans more than before, or the soil has cracked or lifted at its base, have it looked at soon.

Yes, homes near the park back onto brush. In January 2025, the Archer Fire burned 19 acres in O'Melveny Park before crews stopped it, with no homes damaged. Keep dead wood out of your trees and keep limbs off the roof.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Foothill lots toward O'Melveny Park often sit on a slope, and that slope shapes much of the price.

Yes, 24/7. Winter storms and the odd earthquake can bring a tree down at any hour here. Call 877-787-7363.
