Tree care in Hollywood Hills

Steep lots, stairways and fire season

In the Hollywood Hills, the slope decides how a tree comes down. The hills straddle the Cahuenga Pass and have some of the lowest densities in the city, about 3,000 people per square mile. Hollywoodland went on sale in 1923, promoted by the big sign on Mount Lee. Whitley Heights climbs its hillside with winding streets, stairs and retaining walls. Wild slopes grow black sage, scrub oak and toyon. In January 2025, the Sunset Fire burned about 40 acres near Wattles Park before crews stopped it in under a day.

On a hillside, every limb has somewhere to roll.

Who governs tree work in Hollywood Hills

City of Los Angeles

Hollywood Hills has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

What we do here

Roped removals and brush thinning for the Hollywood Hills slopes

Supreme Tree Experts ropes down trees, thins brush and trims palms on the steep, narrow streets of the Hollywood Hills. If a tree on the slope hangs over the house below, Hollywood Hills neighbors rely on Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

Hillside trees come down in small, roped sections, since many homes here sit above other homes. Where the street allows, our 75-ft boom truck lifts pieces up and out. Nothing is dropped where it could roll down the slope.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

We prune out dead limbs and thin crowns back from roofs and decks on steep lots. Dead wood and dry brush under trees give fire a path to the house. Clearing that fuel before the dry months is the first job.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Only the stumps you want gone get ground, and the slope keeps its hold. On steep ground, old roots help keep the soil in place after the tree is cut. Where a stump props up loose soil, we grind it low rather than pull it.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

On hillside palms, the crew cuts the dry skirt of fronds, the seed stalks and the old frond bases. The Sunset Fire burned about 40 acres in these hills in January 2025. Our lift truck reaches the crown from the road, so no one climbs the slope.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Fallen-tree calls anywhere in the Hollywood Hills get an answer 24/7. A tree down on a narrow, winding street can close it to every home above. Our crew clears a lane first, then cuts and hauls the rest.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Yearly visits check each tree's lean, footing and dead wood on a sloped yard. A tree on a grade loads its roots unevenly, so a change in lean matters. We note small shifts and fix them before they grow.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

Tall trees that block a view or hang over the house below are reduced to a lower crown line. Owners in these hills guard their views, and careful thinning keeps them without topping. The tree keeps its natural shape.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

Estate lots in the Hollywood Hills get one steady care plan for their big, old trees. The first hillside homes here went on sale in 1923, and many lots still carry large trees on steep ground. In a historic zone, we check with the city before big changes.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Hedges and shrubs along drives, stairs and narrow frontages are shaped to fit the house. Some hill streets are so tight that gear goes in by hand. Our chippers keep the lane open while the crew works.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

Planting is chosen to suit a steep, dry hillside and the wild slopes around it. Black sage, scrub oak and toyon grow on those slopes. We place plants and water so roots hold the soil without soaking the grade.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

Steps, paths and low walls are built to climb a slope on a firm, drained base. Much of this hillside was built with stairs and retaining walls, and many lots still lean on them. Footings stay clear of big tree roots.

FAQ

Questions worth asking before you book in Hollywood Hills

The 6 worth settling before tree work starts in Hollywood Hills. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

In small pieces, on ropes. Many hillside homes have little flat ground and other homes below them. The crew cuts the tree in sections and lowers each one under control. Where the street allows, our boom truck lifts pieces up and out. Nothing is dropped where it could roll.

Start with dead wood and dry brush near the house. The Sunset Fire in January 2025 started near Wattles Park and burned about 40 acres. Evacuation orders reached up to Mulholland Drive. Dead limbs, piled fronds and brush under trees give fire a path to your home.

Often, with planning. Whitley Heights' streets were paved in 1926 and wind along the slope, and many hill streets are like that. We plan where the truck parks and how neighbors get past. On the tightest streets, gear goes in by hand.

Yes. Whitley Heights became a city historic zone in 2004, and the Lake Hollywood Reservoir with Mulholland Dam is a city monument. Runyon Canyon, 160 acres of city park, reopened in part after the 2025 fires. In a historic zone, check with the city before big changes on your lot.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Steep ground, long carries and narrow streets shape most of the price in the hills.

Yes, 24/7. A tree down on a narrow, winding hill street can close it to everyone above. Call 877-787-7363.
