Tree care in Mar Vista

A modern tract and century-old palms

Some Mar Vista trees are part of a design worth keeping. In 1948, Gregory Ain finished 52 modern homes on Meier, Moore and Beethoven streets. Garrett Eckbo planned the landscape with no front fences, deep front yards and shared back yards. He even gave each back yard a different fruit tree so neighbors would trade. Magnolias on Meier, melaleucas on Moore and ficus on Beethoven still tie the streets together. In 2003, these streets became the city's first postwar modern historic district. Nearby, the Oval District keeps its century-old Canary Island palms.

In the Mar Vista Tract, the trees were drawn into the plan.

Who governs tree work in Mar Vista

City of Los Angeles

Mar Vista has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The list

Mar Vista palms, tract trees and fruit trees, pruned with care

Supreme Tree Experts prunes tract trees, trims century-old Canary Island palms and grinds stumps in Mar Vista. Street trees there are part of the 1948 design, so owners ask the city first, then call Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove yard trees that have died or failed, lowering each piece on ropes. In the Mar Vista Tract, a historic zone since 2003, street trees are part of the design. Before one there is removed or replaced, the owner checks with the city's historic staff.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crew prunes older yard trees gently, with small cuts made over time rather than one heavy trim. Some of the first trees and shrubs here, chosen by Garrett Eckbo, still grow. If one of yours is a survivor, light pruning helps keep it going.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

A stump left from an old removal comes out below the soil with our grinder. We grind the big surface roots as well. The crew rakes the site level and hauls off the chips, unless you want them as mulch.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We trim and skin yard palms, including big Canary Island palms like the century-old ones in the Oval District. Palms that age are tall and heavy at the crown. Dead fronds and old seed stalks come off before they fall, and thick bases are cleaned from the trunk.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crew comes out 24/7 when wind or rain brings a big limb down on your home. Large old ficus stand close to houses here, and their limbs are heavy. We lift the wood off, cut it down to size and clear the path.

  • Tree Maintenance

Regular checks from our crew find weak limbs, dead wood and root trouble before a storm does. Our ISA Certified Arborist tells you what needs doing now. The rest goes on a list for a later visit.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower tall trees in stages, shortening each limb to a strong lower branch. That keeps the crown natural and lightens the load over your roof. Topping is never part of the job, since it leaves weak regrowth.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We care for older back-yard trees little and often, fruit trees most of all. Garrett Eckbo gave each back yard a different fruit tree so neighbors could share the harvest. Light pruning keeps the crown open and the fruit in reach.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Our crew shapes hedges and shrubs low and loose, and leaves walks and drives clear after every visit. These homes were built with no front fences, so planting marks where one yard ends. Soft shaping keeps that open, shared look.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

Our planting plans follow a mixed, open style, with trees sized to each lot. The original homes' deep front yards and shared back yards were first planted with many kinds of plants. Drip watering keeps new beds green without soaking the roots of older trees.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build simple, clean-lined paths and patios on a solid base, routed around big roots. Gregory Ain's 1948 modern homes here suit that plain style. The paving fits the house and leaves nearby trees sound.

The trees are part of the historic design. The tract became a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in 2003, the first for postwar modern homes in the city. Its original street trees were chosen by Garrett Eckbo. Before you remove or replace a street tree there, check with the city's historic staff.

Magnolia on Meier, melaleuca on Moore and ficus on Beethoven. Those parkway trees give each street its own look. Many of the first trees and shrubs are still there, though some have been replaced. If one of yours is a survivor, prune it gently to keep it going.

Little and often. Eckbo planted a different fruit tree in each back yard of the 1948 homes so neighbors could share. Old fruit trees do best when light pruning keeps the crown open and the fruit in reach. Big cuts on an old tree can do more harm than good.

Yes, about that. The Mar Vista Oval District was laid out around 1912, and its Canary Island palms are about a hundred years old. Palms that old are tall and heavy at the crown. Dead fronds and old seed stalks should come off before they fall.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Care around historic street trees and mid-century homes shapes much of the price here.

Yes, 24/7. Big old ficus and palms stand close to homes here, and a storm can drop a heavy limb or frond. Call 877-787-7363.
