Tree care in North Hollywood

Toluca, then Lankershim, then NoHo

North Hollywood began as farmland, and its first lots came already planted with fruit and nut trees. On April 1, 1888, small farms went on sale set with peaches, pears, apricots and walnuts. Those deep-rooted trees lived through dry summers by tapping a high water table instead of irrigation. The town was called Toluca, then Lankershim from 1896, and North Hollywood from 1927. Summers are still hot, with a record high of 112°F. Trees here need deep water, mulch and a check for heat stress more than a coastal yard would.

The first trees here were planted for fruit. The ones you have now are there for shade.

Who governs tree work in North Hollywood

City of Los Angeles

North Hollywood has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

What we do here

Fruit trees, heat checks and palm clean-up for North Hollywood

Supreme Tree Experts prunes fruit trees, checks heat-stressed trees and trims palms in North Hollywood, where summers have hit 112°F. When a heat-stressed limb drops on a calm day, North Hollywood owners call Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take apart unwanted trees in tight North Hollywood yards, where fences, garages and power lines sit close. Careful rigging lowers each piece into whatever open space the yard has. Our chippers then clear the brush from the drive.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune fruit trees for strong branches and easy picking, best done while they are dormant. In 1888, the first farm lots here were sold already planted with peaches, pears and apricots. Shade trees get thinned for light and balance.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind old stumps well below the soil so a new shade tree can go in. A street tree in the parkway takes a no-fee city permit before planting. Pick a tree that takes valley heat and fits the strip.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We clear dead fronds and seed stalks from tall palms over driveways, cars and apartment walks. Our lift truck lets us skin each trunk, taking old frond bases off top to bottom. It leaves less litter to fall and a cleaner trunk.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crews answer calls 24/7 when a heavy limb lands on a house, garage or car. Summer heat and winter wind both bring down limbs from older shade trees here. We cut it free and haul it away.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We check trees for dieback, dry wood and weak limbs on a set schedule. North Hollywood has hit 112°F, and long heat spells leave trees open to pests and dead limbs. Deep, slow watering and mulch help them through.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We bring fast-growing trees down to fit small yards, cutting to sturdy side limbs rather than topping. Trees that crowd power lines are a job for the utility. We shape the rest of the crown around that clearance.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We care for trees on apartment and condo grounds on a set schedule, keeping limbs off roofs, walks and parking. One plan covers every tree on the property. Managers get a note on each tree after every visit.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shear front hedges on busy streets so they stay off the sidewalk and out of sight lines. Tight yards leave little room, so we shape shrubs to fit the space they have. Clippings leave in our chipper.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan North Hollywood yards with drought-ready plants and deep, slow watering for trees. The first farmers here grew fruit on a high water table, not irrigation. Today's yards rely on irrigation, so we plan it with care.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build patios and walks that leave tree roots room to spread, so shade and paving both last. Shade trees matter here, where summers run hot. We set slabs on a firm base, back from the trunk.

The 6 worth settling before tree work starts in North Hollywood. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Fruit and nut trees. In 1888, the land company sold small farms already planted with peaches, pears, apricots and walnuts. They got through rainless summers on the high water table rather than surface irrigation. If you grow fruit trees now, prune them while they are dormant and water deeply.

It has reached 112°F. North Hollywood has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Long heat spells stress trees, and stressed trees are more open to pests and dead limbs. Water deeply and slowly, lay mulch, and have weak or dying limbs removed before summer.

It was a marketing move in 1927. The town was first named Toluca, became Lankershim in 1896, and took its current name to draw on the film industry nearby. That history shows in city monuments like the El Portal Theater and the Amelia Earhart library branch. Mature trees around older buildings like these are worth keeping healthy.

Yes, with a free city permit. North Hollywood is part of the City of Los Angeles, and planting in the parkway needs a no-fee permit from the Urban Forestry Division. Pick a tree that can take Valley heat and won't outgrow the strip.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Tight yards with fences, garages and power lines close by call for careful rigging, and that shapes most prices here.

Yes, 24/7. Summer heat and winter wind can both bring down limbs from older shade trees here. Call 877-787-7363.
