Tree care in Northridge

Citrus country, college town, quake zone

Northridge still has part of the valley's old citrus belt, right on the CSUN campus. The university keeps about 5 acres of Valencia orange trees along Nordhoff Street. There are more than 400, first planted in the early 1940s. Students named it a historic site in 1972 and saved it from a parking lot in 1991. The town began as Zelzah in 1910. Then, on January 17, 1994, a magnitude 6.7 quake struck. All 58 CSUN buildings were damaged. Many backyard trees here have now lived through that shaking.

A tree that rode out the 1994 quake may still carry the damage. Look at its roots, not just its leaves.

Who governs tree work in Northridge

City of Los Angeles

Northridge has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The work

Northridge crowns thinned, backyard citrus pruned, trees removed

Supreme Tree Experts thins crowns, prunes backyard citrus and removes trees in Northridge, which grew up among citrus groves. Worried about heavy limbs over the roof when the ground shakes, Northridge owners have them thinned by Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove trees that stand over pools, block walls and two-story homes, lowering each piece clear of what's below. An old backyard citrus with a rotten trunk is often safer taken out. We check the trunk before you decide.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune old backyard citrus by cutting out dead wood and opening the crown to air and light. CSUN keeps more than 400 Valencia citrus trees along Nordhoff Street, some from 1952. Steady care like that keeps old trees bearing.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind out stumps in Northridge yards, including those tucked against block walls and pool decks. Our grinder works close in without cutting into the wall's footing. Chips are raked into the hole or hauled away.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We take dry fronds and seed stalks off palms before they drop into pools or onto roofs. Our lift truck puts the crew beside a tall trunk to cut old frond bases away evenly. The skinned trunk sheds less litter into the pool.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Any hour, we respond when a quake or winter storm drops a tree onto a Northridge home or wall. In 1994, the magnitude 6.7 quake here set off more than 11,000 landslides across the region. We cut the tree free and make the site safe.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We inspect yard trees for new lean, cracked soil at the trunk and split limbs. A block wall broken by shaking can pull roots up with it. Any of these signs means a tree may be weaker than it looks.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

When a tree climbs past a two-story roofline, we cut its leaders back to sound side limbs. Less height puts less weight over the house when the ground shakes. Topping is never part of our plan, since it leaves weak regrowth.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We manage every tree on larger Northridge lots under one plan, so nothing gets missed year to year. Big shade trees, fruit trees and palms each get their own schedule. You get one visit list instead of many calls.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shape hedges and privacy screens along block walls to a clean, even line, on a schedule you pick. Dense, even growth gives privacy without leaning on the wall. Clippings go through our chipper on site.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan yards for hot, dry summers, with planting that fits your water use. Trees get deep, slow water, and beds stay clear of the trunk. We place new shade trees where roots have room to grow.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We lay patios and paths on a firm base, clear of big roots, so slabs stay level. Many slabs and walls here cracked in the 1994 quake. A firm base and room for roots help new work last longer.

Why Choose Us

Since before the 1994 quake: why Northridge owners hire our family crew

Tree work goes wrong when it is rushed or under-equipped. We run our own 75-foot boom trucks, lift trucks, chippers and stump grinders, and every crew works under an ISA Certified Arborist — so the job gets done right the first time.

We hold California license #1002853 for both landscaping and tree and palm work, we are bonded, we carry general liability and every employee is on workers’ compensation.

FAQ

Straight answers for Northridge

6 questions about tree work in Northridge, answered without the sales language. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Often, yes. CSUN's grove shows how long citrus can last with care. Some of its Valencias date to 1952, and since 2009 volunteers have picked over 153,000 pounds of fruit from it. At home, pruning out dead wood and opening the crown to air and light keeps an old tree going. If the trunk is rotten, removal may be safer.

Check the base first. In 1994, the quake set off more than 11,000 landslides across the region and broke many walls and pipes. Look for new lean, cracked soil at the trunk, split limbs and roots pulled up by a broken block wall. Any of these can mean the tree is weaker than it looks.

Yes. Oakridge was built in 1937 for actress Barbara Stanwyck, then bought by Jack Oakie in 1941, who gave it its name. The City of Los Angeles bought the estate in 2009, and Recreation and Parks runs it. Its grounds are a landmark, so its trees are the city's to care for, not a homeowner's.

Yes, it is the city's. Northridge, first called Zelzah, is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and major pruning or removal of that tree takes a city permit. What grows on your side of the sidewalk is yours to care for. On a free visit, we mark which are which.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Here, big trees standing over pools, block walls or two-story homes shape much of the price.

Yes, 24/7. Northridge knows how fast things change when the ground shakes, and winter storms can drop limbs too. Call 877-787-7363.
