Tree care in Oak Park

County rules, creeks and fire country

Oak Park is not a city, so its trees follow Ventura County's rules. It protects any single-trunk oak or sycamore 9.5 inches or more around. Oaks with several trunks count at 6.25 inches, and any tree 90 inches around is a heritage tree. Oak Park is the largest unincorporated community there, with about 13,900 people. It was built on the ranch of radio stars Jim and Marian Jordan, and homes went up from the late 1960s. Medea Creek and Lindero Creek run through it. On November 8 and 9, 2018, the Woolsey Fire burned through Oak Park.

Here, the zoning code decides. An oak with just a 9.5-inch girth can already be protected.

Who governs tree work in Oak Park

County of Ventura (unincorporated)

Oak Park is in unincorporated Ventura County, so tree work follows the County of Ventura's Tree Protection Regulations (Sec. 8107-25). Protected trees include oaks with a trunk girth of 9.5 inches or more (6.25 inches for multi-trunk oaks), sycamores of 9.5 inches or more, historical trees, and heritage trees of any species at 90 inches in girth, and no one may alter, fell or remove a protected tree except as the code allows, usually with a Tree Permit. You can prune dead limbs of any size without a permit, and living limbs each under 20 percent of the trunk's girth, as long as no more than 20 percent of the canopy is removed. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

What we do here

County oak rules and fire fuel: Oak Park palm, stump and oak care

Supreme Tree Experts clears dead fronds, grinds fire-killed stumps and cares for oaks in Oak Park, under county tree rules. If a tree near your house was scorched in 2018, Oak Park homeowners have it checked by Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

Oak Park is not a city, so Ventura County's tree rules apply here. They protect single-trunk oaks and sycamores at a 9.5-inch girth or more. Removing one usually needs a Tree Permit, so we measure first.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune dead limbs of any size, which needs no permit. Live limbs can come off without one if each is under 20 percent of the trunk's girth. No more than 20 percent of the canopy can go.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Fire-killed trees can leave stumps near fences, slopes and drives. Our own stump grinders take them below grade, and our chippers clear the dead wood from the lot. The ground is left level and ready to replant.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

Dead palm fronds sit like a dry skirt beside the house, so we cut them back to green. Skinning strips old frond bases from the trunk and takes away the dry material that collects there. Our lift truck reaches the full height.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

The Woolsey Fire burned into Oak Park on November 8, 2018. It showed how fast trouble can reach these streets from the hills. If a burned or storm-hit tree leans toward your house, call us 24/7.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Home building here began in the late 1960s, and trees planted then are tall now. Big, aging trees need regular checks for weak wood and dead limbs. We catch problems early, before a limb fails.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

A tall tree close to the house can be lowered with proper cuts, never topped. An oak with several trunks is protected at just 6.25 inches around. We measure before any height work on an oak.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

Lots that back onto open space often mix native oaks with planted trees. We care for all of them on one plan, with the protected trees marked. Each visit keeps within what the rules allow.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Shrubs that grow thick next to the house can carry flame to it. We thin and shape them so they stay spaced, low and green. Dead growth hidden inside each shrub comes out too, and we haul it away.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

Medea Creek and Lindero Creek run through the community, so some yards sit near water and others on dry slopes. We plan planting that fits each yard's water, from creek-side shade to sunny banks. New trees go where they can grow full size.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

Walls, steps and paths on sloped yards need a firm, drained base. Our crews keep new hardscape clear of the roots of protected oaks. That avoids root damage that could count as harm to the tree.

FAQ

Questions worth asking before you book in Oak Park

The 6 worth settling before tree work starts in Oak Park. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Ventura County. Oak Park is an unincorporated community, not a city, so its zoning code applies. Its tree rules cover oaks, sycamores and several other native trees, plus historical trees and heritage trees. Check with it before you cut a protected tree.

Smaller than most people think. A single-trunk oak is protected at a 9.5-inch girth, about 3 inches across. For an oak with several trunks, the mark is 6.25 inches. Sycamores count at the same 9.5-inch mark. Any tree with a 90-inch girth is a heritage tree.

It burned into Oak Park on November 8, 2018. Two homes burned on a cul-de-sac off Wembly Avenue, and two were badly damaged on Churchwood Drive near Kanan Road. Trees that stood through that heat may have hidden damage, so have scorched trees near the house checked.

No. It is a census-designated place in Ventura County, and with 13,898 people in 2020 it is the largest unincorporated community there. Its schools are run by Oak Park Unified, which split from its old district by vote in 1977. So for trees, the rules come from there too.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Sloped yards and fire-damaged wood near homes shape most prices here.

Yes, 24/7. The 2018 fire showed how fast trouble can reach these streets from the hills around them. Call 877-787-7363.
