Tree Service in Playa del Rey, CA

Playa del Rey was built on wind-blown dunes, between a lagoon, a creek and bluffs up to 125 feet high. That sand shapes how trees root and lean, which our tree service in Playa del Rey keeps in mind as we prune and remove them.

Dunes, a lagoon and a wetland next door

Playa del Rey's homes stand on wind-blown sand, and that shapes how its trees root and lean. The dunes along the bluffs rise to about 125 feet, and a 1918 road map marked the ground "heavy sand impassable." Lots went on sale by streetcar in 1902, the Palisades del Rey tract came in 1921, and the Del Rey Hills followed in 1928. Del Rey Lagoon, a 6-acre remnant of an 1870s harbor, now sits in a 14-acre city park. Next door, the 577-acre Ballona Wetlands list Canary Island palm and myoporum among their introduced plants.

On sand, a tree's roots matter as much as its crown.

Who governs tree work in Playa del Rey

City of Los Angeles

Playa del Rey has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The work

On Playa del Rey's dunes: bluff pruning, removals and palm care

Supreme Tree Experts thins crowns, removes trees and skins palms in Playa del Rey, built on wind-blown dunes. Sandy soil can let a tree lean, and bluff-top owners who spot one bring in Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take down leaning and failing trees in Playa del Rey, in sections sized to each lot. Much of the town sits on wind-blown dune sand, which gives roots less grip. Near a bluff edge, we check the soil and slope before any cut.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews thin crowns on bluff and beach lots so the sea wind passes through instead of pushing. Crossing limbs and dead wood come out, and the tree keeps its natural shape. Lighter crowns put less strain on roots set in sand.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

After a removal, our grinder chews the stump and big surface roots down below the sand. We rake the spot level and backfill it. The yard is then ready for new planting, paving or a fresh patch of lawn.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

Our crews remove seed stalks early, strip dead fronds and skin yard palm trunks from our lift truck. Canary Island palms spread on their own into the Ballona Wetlands next door. Taking the stalks early keeps the seed at home.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Storm damage gets a 24/7 response from our crew, whether a limb splits onto a roof or a drive. Homes on the bluffs face the open beach and its wind. We make the site safe, then carry the wood up to the street.

  • Tree Maintenance

Every tree gets a yearly look from us at lean, root hold and dead wood. In loose soil, small shifts in lean are worth catching early. Our ISA Certified Arborist does the check, and the visit is free.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

Height on bluff trees comes down through reduction cuts to strong laterals, not topping. The dunes along the bluffs rise to about 125 feet, open to wind off the water. A shorter crown catches less of that wind.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

Owners of larger bluff lots get a long-term plan from us for each big tree. We note how every tree stands, how it roots and what it needs by season. Big jobs are spread out, so no single visit is a strain.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Hedges and shrubs get sheared by our crew before they set seed, which matters here. Myoporum is on the Ballona Wetlands list of introduced plants, and yard seed can spread into the reserve. We clip it tight and haul away every cutting.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

Garden plans from our crew keep plants in the yard, not seeding into the reserve next door. Pampas grass, castor bean and ice plant have all spread into the wetlands from gardens. We pick plants that suit sand, salt air and little water.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

Patios and paths from our crews go down on a well-packed base, since so much ground here is dune sand. A 1918 road map even marked it heavy sand, impassable. Good edging and drainage keep the paving level for years.

Straight answers for Playa del Rey

6 questions about tree work in Playa del Rey, answered without the sales language. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

It can, which is why the roots get checked first. Much of Playa del Rey was built on wind-blown dunes, and the bluffs rise to about 125 feet. Loose sand gives roots less grip, and a tree near a bluff edge can lean over time. An arborist looks at the lean, the soil and the slope before suggesting any cuts.

Think twice. The Ballona Wetlands next door list Canary Island palm, myoporum, pampas grass, castor bean and ice plant among their introduced plants. Seeds from yards can spread into the reserve. If you already have them, regular trimming and shearing keeps the seed down.

A 6-acre lagoon inside a 14-acre city park. It is what remains of the 1870s Port Ballona harbor, which winter floods ruined. The lagoon held crew races in the early 1900s, and by the 1950s a gate refilled it at high tide. Today great blue herons and bufflehead ducks use it.

They were moved or torn down between 1966 and 1975. The Surfridge area was taken for airport growth and because of jet noise. Today the empty dunes there are protected habitat for an endangered butterfly, so that ground stays open.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Here, bluff slopes, sandy ground and how far wood must be carried up to the street shape the price most.

Yes, 24/7. Homes on the bluffs face the open beach, and a storm can split a tree over a roof or a steep drive. Call 877-787-7363.
