Tree care in Santa Ynez

An 1882 Western town among the valley oaks

In Santa Ynez, the county sets the tree rules, and its oak ordinance applies to ranch land outside the town boundary. Founded in 1882, Santa Ynez is still a Western-style town ringed by ranchettes and farms. About 4,000 people live on its roughly 1,565 acres, most on lots near an acre. Shops center on Sagunto Street, where the historical museum stands. The town has the valley's only high school, a county park and a public airport. The Chumash reservation along Zanja de Cota Creek sets its own land-use rules.

In Santa Ynez, the parcel decides the rule: town lot, ranch land or reservation.

Who governs tree work in Santa Ynez

County of Santa Barbara (unincorporated)

Santa Ynez is unincorporated, so tree work follows County of Santa Barbara rules. On rural land zoned for agriculture or resource management outside the coastal zone and urban boundary lines, the County's Deciduous Oak Tree Protection and Regeneration Ordinance (Chapter 35, Article IX) protects valley oaks and blue oaks that are 4 inches or more in diameter at breast height (4.5 feet up), and removing more than a set number per lot needs an Oak Tree Removal Permit. Oaks that are naturally dead or uprooted, within 50 feet of an existing home, or an immediate safety threat are exempt from this permit. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Acre-lot removals, oak pruning and lane clearing in Santa Ynez

Supreme Tree Experts prunes valley oaks and raises limbs over ranch lanes on Santa Ynez's acre lots. When wind drops a big limb far from the road on an acre lot, owners call Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We fell trees on acre lots and ranchettes, taking each down whole or in sections as room allows. Most homes here sit on lots near an acre, and ranchettes can run up to three. Firewood rounds can stay stacked on your land if you like.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews raise and thin limbs over ranchette drives and lanes. Those drives often carry horse trailers and farm trucks, so clearance matters as much as shape. We cut back to strong branches and leave the crown balanced.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind old stumps out of the way when a guest house, pad or garden is planned. The community plan notes that second units are going up on more lots here. A clean grind leaves level ground to build or plant on.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We cut dry fronds and fruit stalks from yard palms before the hot months set in. Dry summers turn dead fronds into ready fuel near a home. The crew skins old frond bases from our lift truck for a clean, even trunk.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

We take calls day and night when wind drops a big limb on an acre lot far from the road. The community plan rates most of the area high risk for wildfire, due to terrain and heavy fuel. We bring the gear to reach the back of the lot.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

We check the big oak trees on your lot each year for deadwood, decay and weak limbs. Valley oak savanna covers about 4,189 acres in and near the area's townships, the community plan found. Your trees are part of that stand, and steady care keeps them sound.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower long, heavy oak limbs with reduction cuts back to side branches, easing weight over roofs and barns. Valley oaks spread wide over the open ground around town. We never top them, since that leaves weak regrowth.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We plan each year's care for ranchettes and farm land outside the town boundary. There, the county protects valley and blue oaks 4 inches across and tracks removals over 30 years. Trees that are dead, or stand within 50 feet of a house, fall outside the rule.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shear hedges on the tighter lots north of the old center, where lots shrink to about 10,000 square feet. Shrubs get shaped to fit, with walks and drives kept clear. We cut them back on a cycle so they stay inside the line.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan planting that suits the dry climate here, with trees placed well away from the house. The community plan calls for street trees and tree wells in the Sagunto Street business core. At home, we choose trees that fit the same hot, dry summers.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We plan patios and paths around the critical root zone of the trees you keep. For new development, the valley plan sets that zone at one foot of radius per inch of trunk width. We use the same measure when laying out stone and paving.
