Tree care in West Los Angeles
Sawtelle's nurseries and a gardening past
West Los Angeles has deep roots in the gardening trade. Japanese Americans settled in Sawtelle before it joined the city in 1922. Some farmed south of Pico Boulevard, and others worked at the Soldiers' Home, now the VA campus. Garden upkeep was one of the few jobs open to them. By 1941, Sawtelle had 26 Japanese American nurseries serving gardeners across the Westside. Two old ones still stand on Sawtelle Boulevard, including Hashimoto Nursery, which opened in 1928. Stoner Park still hosts a yearly Cherry Blossom Festival.
Good garden work has a long history here. We try to live up to it.

Who governs tree work in West Los Angeles
City of Los Angeles
West Los Angeles has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.
The work
Careful pruning and hedge shaping for West Los Angeles gardens
Supreme Tree Experts prunes, shapes shrubs and removes trees in West Los Angeles, home to Sawtelle's old garden nurseries. When a tree on a tight lot must come down by rope, owners here hand it to Supreme Tree Experts.
Tree Removal

Tight West Los Angeles lots call for sectional removal, and our crew lowers each piece by rope. A parkway tree is a city street tree, so the owner asks the city first. We show you where your lot line runs before we quote.
Tree Trimming & Pruning

Our crews prune tall trees on small lots with small, careful cuts that keep a natural shape. Limbs over roofs and next-door yards are shortened to sound forks. Dead wood comes out on every visit.
Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

We grind stumps out so the yard can be replanted, even where the lot is small. Surface roots that trip feet or lift walks come out too. The crew rakes the spot level and hauls the chips before leaving.
Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

We trim palms that rise above apartment roofs, clearing dead fronds and fruit stalks. The old boots come off next, peeled down the trunk with help from our lift truck. Parked cars below are kept clear while we work.
Emergency Tree Service

Our 24/7 crew clears fallen trees and limbs off drives, walks and roofs any hour. A tree down on a busy Westside block can shut a sidewalk or a lane of traffic. We open the way first, then cut up and chip the wood.
Tree Maintenance

Our yearly checks look closely at the base of big trees in damp ground. The Tongva Sacred Springs still flow at 22,000 to 25,000 gallons a day. Wet soil can weaken roots and let a tree lean or rot.
Tree Height Reduction

We lower tall crowns in steps, pruning back to side limbs and never topping. A shorter tree shades the house next door less. It also takes weight off limbs that reach over apartment roofs and fences.
Estate Tree Care

Older lots with several big trees get one yearly plan from us. We note each tree's health and set the work in order of need. That spreads the cost over the year and keeps risk low.
Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Clipped pines and shrubs in a Japanese-style garden get small, careful cuts from our crew. We shape by hand and take a little at a time. Sawtelle still has a bonsai nursery from 1934, and that patient craft is the model.
Landscaping

Trees sized to small lots and their soil are the start of every planting plan we draw here. Sawtelle had 26 Japanese American nurseries by 1941, and gardens still matter here. We pick plants that fit your space and need little water.
Hardscape

We set garden paths and small patios with good drainage built in. Where big roots run near the surface, the paving bends around them. That keeps walks level and trees sound on these small lots.

No, it belongs to the city. West Los Angeles, part of the city since Sawtelle joined in 1922, keeps no separate tree code. A parkway tree is a city street tree, so the owner asks the city first. Trees on your side of the lot line are yours, and an arborist can show you where that line runs.
Because of its Japanese American nurseries. By 1941, Sawtelle had 26 of them. They served the Westside and the Japanese American gardeners who worked there. The city's historic survey still lists two as legacy businesses, including Hashimoto Nursery, open since 1928 on Sawtelle Boulevard.
Yes. Clipped pines and shrubs need small, careful cuts made over time, not one big trim. Sawtelle still has a bonsai nursery dating from 1934, a sign of how long that craft has lived here. We shape by hand and take a little at a time.
Yes, and one is well known. The Tongva Sacred Springs still flow at 22,000 to 25,000 gallons a day. Ground that stays wet can weaken roots and let a tree lean. If your yard stays damp, we check the base of big trees for lean and rot.
Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Getting trucks onto busy, parked-up blocks and lowering trees in small pieces shapes most of the price.
