Tree care in Westchester

From hog farm to ranch homes to rebuilds

In Westchester, many tree jobs start with a building plan. The area was farmland until the late 1930s, when Fritz Burns and Fred Marlow built low-cost homes on an old hog farm at Manchester and Sepulveda. It grew fast with the wartime aircraft plants. The jet age cost it 4,500 homes to airport buyouts, and the golf course shrank from 18 holes to 15. Today, many postwar ranch houses are being rebuilt as two-story homes. Before a rebuild, you need to know which trees can stay and which must go.

Before the addition goes up, decide which trees stay.

Who governs tree work in Westchester

City of Los Angeles

Westchester has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by the City of Los Angeles, and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. No pruning permits shall be issued for Historic-Cultural Monument street trees without written approval of Urban Forestry Division management. All tree planting requires a no-fee plant permit that is issued by the Bureau’s UFD. Additionally, UFD upholds protection of Oak trees and other native tree and shrub species protected by the City of Los Angeles’ Protected Tree and Shrub Ordinance. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Before the second story: Westchester tree removal and roof pruning

Supreme Tree Experts removes, thins and grinds out trees in Westchester, where 1940s ranch homes are going two-story. A second story changes which trees can stay, so Westchester owners plan that early with Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove trees that stand in the way of a Westchester rebuild or second-story addition. Big trees close to the walls can block the work or lose roots when footings go in. Walk the site with us and your plans, and we mark which trees to keep.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews thin and shorten limbs that reach over low ranch roofs. Branches that rub the shingles wear them down and fill the gutters. Each cut ends at a healthy fork, so the crown stays balanced.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Our stump grinders take old stumps and their root flare out deep, so builders can dig footings and trench lines. We grind the big surface roots too. The crew leaves a level, clean patch ready for the next trade.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We skin and trim yard palms so dead fronds stop landing on one-story roofs. Seed stalks come off with the fronds. For a smooth trunk, the crew removes the old frond bases, called boots, from our lift truck.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Call our crew 24/7 when a heavy limb crashes onto a low ranch roof. On a one-story home, that limb can land right in the living space. We lift it off the roof, cut it up and clear the yard.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Our yearly checks look at big yard trees on the first ranch lots in Westchester. Most homes here went up in the 1940s, and many of those first homes still stand. Trees that old need a close look at their trunks, forks and roots.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

Tall trees that shade solar panels or a new second story get lowered by our crew, cutting to lower laterals. Topping is never used, since it leaves weak, fast regrowth. We take the height down in steps over one or two visits.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We care for yard trees on a set plan for owners getting ready to sell or remodel. A dead or leaning tree can worry buyers and builders alike. Dealing with it first keeps the project on track.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Our crew keeps hedges low and neat so they suit a ranch-style front yard. Shrubs are shaped on a regular cycle, not left to grow out and then cut hard. We rake up every clipping before we go.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

When a ranch house grows into two stories, we plan new planting for the changed yard. Trees go where the new walls and windows leave room for them. Low-water beds and drip lines keep the yard easy to care for.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We lay new paths and patios after a rebuild, clear of the roots of trees you kept. Building crews, dumpsters and fencing often leave a yard packed hard. We loosen and grade the ground before new paving goes down.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Westchester tree company

6 of them, answered here for Westchester. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Decide early. Many Westchester ranch homes are being turned into two-story houses. Big trees close to the walls can block the work or lose roots when footings go in. An arborist can walk the site with your plans and mark which trees to keep and which to remove.

Mostly in the 1940s. Fritz Burns and Fred Marlow started with low-cost prefab homes in the late 1930s, and the area grew with the aircraft plants during World War II. Many of those first homes still stand. When a home is that old, its big yard trees deserve a close look too.

Yes, the parkway tree is the city's. Westchester has no tree rules of its own. Before a street tree is pruned or removed, the owner asks the city. Trees on your side of the sidewalk are yours, and we can prune or remove them.

If you plan to sell or rebuild, yes. Westchester home prices rose 25 percent in 2013–14 alone, and many buyers now remodel. A dead or leaning tree can worry buyers and builders. Taking care of it first keeps the project on track.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. On rebuild sites, working around dumpsters, fencing and building crews shapes much of the price.

Yes, 24/7. A storm can drop a heavy limb onto a low ranch roof, where it does real damage fast. Call 877-787-7363.
