What trees in North County San Diego are up against

In North County, the kind of place you live in decides who has a say over your trees. Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside, Solana Beach and Vista set rules for trees in the street strip. Poway and Escondido also reach into private yards. Poway names four native species, and Escondido guards oaks 10 inches or more across. Del Mar requires a permit for every Torrey pine and Monterey cypress. Bonsall, Fallbrook and Fairbanks Ranch are unincorporated, so the County runs the road right-of-way. Rancho Santa Fe answers to its Association's Covenant.

Wildfire has reached towns across North County, on the coast as well as inland. The Witch Fire of October 2007 forced evacuations in Escondido and Poway. In Rancho Santa Fe, it hit more than 80 homes. That same month, a dead limb fell on power lines in Fallbrook and started the Rice Fire. Carlsbad lost 600 acres of brush to the Poinsettia Fire in 2014. Bonsall saw 4,100 acres burn in the 2017 Lilac Fire.

Tree services across North County San Diego

  • Tree Removal

Removal triggers differ by town. Del Mar flags any Torrey pine, Poway its native oaks and sycamores, Escondido larger oaks, and Carlsbad and Vista street trees.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Street-strip trees in Carlsbad and Encinitas need a city permit even for pruning. Solana Beach allows light routine trimming. Trees on private ground are yours to prune when you like.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

We grind old avocado and citrus stumps in Fallbrook, Bonsall, Vista and Escondido. Eucalyptus stumps can resprout, so those get ground below grade.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

From Oceanside to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, we check Canary Island date palm crowns for signs of the South American palm weevil. Inland, dry fronds come off before fire season.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Our crews answer 24/7. In Oceanside and Encinitas, city crews look after city trees and streets. A fallen private tree stays the owner's job.

  • Tree Maintenance

Inland care runs on the fire calendar. The fire districts serving Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch and Bonsall want dead plants or dead limbs cleared. Coastal eucalyptus get regular checks.

Tree questions from North County San Diego

Answers that apply across North County San Diego. Your town's page has its own rules. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Poway, Escondido and Del Mar each protect certain trees, even in private yards. Poway covers California sycamore, Engelmann oak, coast live oak and canyon live oak. Escondido protects oaks that measure 10 inches or more at 4½ feet. Del Mar covers every Monterey cypress and Torrey pine. Encinitas limits removal of trees on its heritage list. Check with your city or HOA before work is booked.

The County of San Diego, since both are unincorporated. Fallbrook has neither a city tree ordinance nor a city arborist. Work along a County road's right-of-way calls for a County Tree Permit. It costs nothing, but the County takes about two weeks to review it. In Fairbanks Ranch, also ask the Association about its rules. Trees fully on your property are your call.

Fire districts here set clearance rules that tree work has to meet. In Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch, the local district asks for 100 feet of defensible space. Branches are kept 10 feet or more clear of roofs and chimneys. North County Fire wants the first 50 feet around a Bonsall home lean and green. Escondido, Poway and Fallbrook all faced wildfire in 2007.
