Tree Service in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Rancho Santa Fe's tall eucalyptus date back to 1906, and its Covenant still guards trees near the road. Tree service in Rancho Santa Fe follows both the Covenant and defensible-space rules, and we trim or remove on large lots within them.
Tree care in Rancho Santa Fe
A planted forest under two sets of rules
Rancho Santa Fe's big trees began as a failed railroad plan. In 1906 the Santa Fe Railway planted about 3.5 million blue gum eucalyptus for railroad ties, but the wood was too soft to hold spikes. The trees stayed and grew tall. The community is unincorporated, and its Covenant is a state historic landmark. Under it, trees over 5 feet tall within 25 feet of a public road need the Association's written OK to cut. The fire district adds its own rules. In 2007 the Witch Fire damaged or destroyed more than 80 homes here.
Here two groups have a say before a tree is cut: the Association for the road zone, and the fire district for everything near the house.

Who governs tree work in Rancho Santa Fe
County of San Diego (unincorporated); Rancho Santa Fe Association (Protective Covenant)Rancho Santa Fe Association
Rancho Santa Fe is in unincorporated San Diego County, but inside the Covenant the Rancho Santa Fe Association is the main gate for tree work. Under the Protective Covenant, no tree or shrub over 5 feet tall within 25 feet of any public road may be cut back, removed or killed without the Association's written approval. The Association alone may trim, remove or replant trees and plantings in the sidewalk or other spaces in front of or next to lots, and this rule does not apply to fruit or orchard trees kept for their crops. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.
What we handle
Eucalyptus reduction, grove cleanup and palms in Rancho Santa Fe
Supreme Tree Experts lowers blue gums and clears dead grove trees in Rancho Santa Fe, where eucalyptus date to 1906. Once the Association signs off on a roadside tree, owners hand the cutting to Supreme Tree Experts.
Tree Removal

We take down trees across large Rancho Santa Fe lots after checking where each one stands. The Covenant says a tree over the height limit near a public road needs Association sign-off. Fruit and orchard trees kept for crops are exempt.
Tree Trimming & Pruning

Our crews prune branches well back from roofs and chimneys, to the gap the district asks for. We shape each cut so the tree keeps its form instead of looking stripped. Deadwood comes out in the same visit.
Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

We grind grove stumps below grade when you plan to replant. The district lets eucalyptus grove stumps stay if they stand no more than 6 inches high. Lower is better for mowing and new planting, and our grinder handles both.
Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Our crew trims dead fronds from palms lining drives and courtyards and skins old bases off the trunks. The district counts dead palm fronds as fuel inside the 100-foot zone around the house. From the lift truck, we reach the crown without climbing.
Emergency Tree Service

We come out day or night when wind drops a eucalyptus limb on a drive or roof. Santa Ana winds gusted past 100 mph here in 2007, when the Witch Fire hit over 80 homes. Long private drives get opened first.
Tree Maintenance

Each year we walk eucalyptus groves and mark dead, dying or sick trees for removal. The rules ask that groves stay free of them, so a yearly visit keeps you ahead. Healthy grove trees get deadwood cleared.
Tree Height Reduction

We reduce the tallest blue gum eucalyptus with cuts that take weight off the top without topping. Many date from a 1906 railroad planting, and a century of growth has made them very tall. A 75-foot boom truck puts us at the high crowns.
Estate Tree Care

We keep large estates on one plan that covers eucalyptus, oaks, orchards and ornamentals. Over the drive, we lift trees to 13 feet 6 inches so engines can pass. Crowns that join above the road get thinned too.
Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

We shape hedges and thin shrubs along access roads, where the district wants roadside brush cut back. Under trees, the lowest branch must sit 3 times the brush height, with a 10-foot minimum. We trim both to match.
Landscaping

We lay out planting by defensible-space zone, keeping beds past the first 5-foot band around the house. The district wants that strip free of anything that burns, and dead plants cleared across the rest of the buffer. We pick plants that stay green with steady water.
Hardscape

Our hardscape crew lays gravel paths, stone edging and patios that give a home a non-burning border. In front of lots, only the Association trims or replants the sidewalk strip, so we keep work inside your line. Roots of big trees are left intact.

Yes, in most cases. The Covenant says no tree or shrub over 5 feet tall within 25 feet of any public road may be cut back, removed or killed without the Association's written approval. Fruit and orchard trees kept for their crops are not covered. Ask the Association before any work in that zone.
The district asks for a 100-foot buffer of defensible space, in three zones. In the first 5-foot band, remove everything that burns. Beyond that band, out to its edge, clear dead plants, including palm fronds and eucalyptus debris. Keep branches at least 10 feet from roofs and chimneys.
Groves must be kept free of dead, dying or sick trees. Stumps up to 6 inches high can stay. Where brush grows under a tree, its lowest branch must be three times the brush height or 10 feet, whichever is greater.
The district wants street trees pruned to 13 feet 6 inches of clear height, so engines can pass. Brush and grass in a 20-foot strip beside an access road must be thinned. It also suggests thinning trees whose crowns join over the road. If the tree is also in the Covenant's road zone, get the Association's OK first.
Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Long drives, big lots and very tall eucalyptus shape most prices here.
Yes, 24/7. Santa Ana winds can drive through here hard, as they did in the 2007 Witch Fire. Call 877-787-7363.
