Tree care in Anaheim Hills

Graded hills, three big fires and a 58-acre oak canyon

In Anaheim Hills, yard trees are the owner's job, and spacing between crowns matters most. Texaco took over Louis Nohl's ranch in 1970, and homes went up from 1971 on graded hills. It was the first housing tract to use landform grading. The hills have burned more than once. The 1982 Gypsum Canyon Fire took 14 homes. In 2008 the Freeway Complex Fire burned 14 houses and 86 apartments here, and in 2017 Canyon Fire 2 destroyed 25 homes. The city advises keeping branches 10 feet apart near the house. Oak Canyon Nature Center still holds 58 acres of oak woodland.

In these hills, a tree is judged by its gap from the house and the ground it stands on.

Who governs tree work in Anaheim Hills

City of Anaheim

Tree work in Anaheim Hills follows the City of Anaheim's rules. Much of the area sits in the city's Scenic Corridor (SC) Overlay Zone, east of where the SR-55 and SR-91 freeways meet, and there you need a Specimen Tree Removal Permit before you cut down, remove, top or harmfully prune a specimen tree: an oak with a trunk 25 inches or more around, or a pepper or sycamore 50 inches or more around, measured 4 feet above the ground (Anaheim Municipal Code 18.18.040). Dead, hazardous or damaging trees still need an application plus an arborist report, and trees you or a past owner planted are exempt only if they cannot be seen from a street or right-of-way and are not on a commonly viewed slope. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Fire spacing, slope removals and palm frond cuts in Anaheim Hills

Supreme Tree Experts thins crowns for safe spacing, removes hillside trees and cuts dry palm fronds in Anaheim Hills. After a wet winter loosens the ground under a big tree, hill owners get help from Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove trees on these graded hill lots in sections, lowering each piece down the slope on ropes. In the Scenic Corridor zone, large oaks, peppers and sycamores need a specimen permit before removal. Even dead ones need an application and an arborist report, so we check the rule first.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our pruning here thins and spaces crowns to slow the spread of flames. The city advises at least 10 feet between the branches of trees within 30 feet of the house. We measure that gap and remove whole limbs to open it.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Landform grading left many yards in Anaheim Hills stepped into terraces, one above the next. We grind stumps below grade on each level, so the terrace can be planted again. Chips are hauled up and out rather than left to wash down the slope.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We trim dead fronds from hillside palms and skin the dry frond bases off their trunks. Canyon Fire 2 spread here in 2017 on embers, and dry fronds by the eaves can catch them. From our lift truck, the trunk is cleared in even rings.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

If wind or a wet winter brings a tree down on your house, our crew answers 24/7. On steep terraces, we check the footing and the ground before anyone climbs. Then the tree comes off the roof in pieces.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Yard oaks get a regular check for thinning crowns, a sign the city links to the goldspotted oak borer. Oak Canyon Nature Center keeps 58 acres of oak woodland close by. Do not bring in oak firewood from other areas.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

Homes on these graded tracts sit one above another, and a tree below can grow into the view above. We drop the crown height by cutting to lower branches, never topping. The tree stays full while the view opens up.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

Larger ridge lots carry many mature trees, so one plan covers pruning, spacing and dead wood each year. Cal Fire redrew the hazard zones in spring 2025, and the city rates this east side as the highest threat. We build that into the plan.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Terrace hedges and shrubs along slope walls get sheared and shaped on a set round. From 30 to 100 feet out, the city asks for open space between trees and shrubs. Our crew trims each plant back so that gap stays clear.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan hillside beds with gaps between plants and trees placed well back from the house. These hills burned in 1982, 2008 and 2017, so what grows near the walls matters most. Low, well-watered plants go closest to the home.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

Walks, steps and patios on these slopes must sit on a solid base with a clear path for water. Hillsides here slid in 1993 and again in 2005. We keep new work back from big roots near the grade, so the soil they hold stays put.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Anaheim Hills tree company

6 of them, answered here for Anaheim Hills. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

The city trims public parkway trees; trees on your lot are yours. The city works on about 6,000 trees a year, one grid district at a time. A tree behind the sidewalk, on a slope or in the back yard is the owner's to care for. Our arborist can sort out which is which during the free estimate.

The city's advice is at least 10 feet between the branches of trees within 30 feet of the house. From 30 to 100 feet out, it asks for space between trees and shrubs. Cal Fire updated the hazard zones in spring 2025, and the city says the threat is highest on this east side.

It is a beetle that attacks oaks, and the city lists it on its Oak Canyon Nature Center page. That 58-acre park holds some of the last oak woodland in the region. If a yard oak starts to thin, have it looked at, and do not bring in oak firewood from other areas.

Yes. It began on Oct. 9, 2017, near the 91 Freeway and Gypsum Canyon Road. Embers from an earlier fire and strong winds drove it across 9,217 acres. About 16,570 people were told to leave, and 25 homes were lost. Cut back limbs over the roof before the windy season.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. On a hill lot, price mostly turns on the grade, access and how far wood must be carried to the truck.

Yes, 24/7. Wet winters have moved these hillsides before, and a soaked slope can let a big tree lean or fall. Call 877-787-7363.

  • ISA Certified Arborist

An arborist walks your lot for free. On these hills that means checking the grade, the gaps between crowns and whether a tree is the city's or yours before a price is set.

  • Licensed, Bonded & Insured

Hill lots call for a crew with papers. Ask for ours: CSLB #1002853, covering tree service (C-61/D-49) and landscaping (C-27). A bond backs the work, and every worker is insured.

  • Southern California Since 1985

These hills were fourteen years into building when our family business started in 1985. The same family runs it today.

  • Our Own Equipment

Our own 75-foot boom trucks reach trees set far back from the street, and the chipper and stump grinder come up the hill on the same trip.
