What trees in Orange County are up against

In Orange County, the body that approves your tree work changes from one town to the next. Most cities control the trees in their own parkways and medians. North Tustin, Silverado and Trabuco Canyon are unincorporated, so county rules apply there. In Ladera Ranch and Coto de Caza, the master association's review board is the first gate. SAMLARC plays that role for its homes in Rancho Santa Margarita. Inside Laguna Woods Village, the Village decides, not the city.

Rules for trees in your own yard differ just as much. Irvine requires a permit to remove an old eucalyptus windrow tree, even on private land. San Juan Capistrano protects eight heritage kinds once a trunk reaches 36 inches across. Brea guards native trees on lots of 20,000-plus square feet. Lake Forest limits eucalyptus cutting between April 1 and October 31. Laguna Beach, by contrast, asks no permit for most private trees.

Tree services across Orange County

  • Tree Removal

Before a removal, we check your town's rule. Irvine windrow eucalyptus, Brea natives on big lots and San Juan Capistrano heritage trees can each need an owner-filed permit.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

We shorten crowns with reduction cuts, never topping, which Irvine and San Juan Capistrano restrict. Lake Forest eucalyptus pruning waits for November through March unless the tree is a hazard.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stumps are ground below grade, then we chip, haul and clean up. Fast chipping matters in Lake Forest, where piled eucalyptus wood can breed borer beetles.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Our lift truck reaches tall coastal palms, salt-browned at the tips in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach. Ladera Ranch limits new palms to Spanish or Monterey homes.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Santa Ana winds often drop limbs at night, and we work 24/7. Villa Park's plan says they can reach 100 mph, and 2020 Silverado Fire gusts hit 80 mph.

  • Tree Maintenance

Planned towns were planted in one push. Aliso Viejo's canopy is 25 to 40 years old, and Mission Viejo counts 47 trees per 100 residents. Yearly checks catch aging flaws.

FAQ

Tree questions from Orange County

Answers that apply across Orange County. Your town's page has its own rules. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Irvine, San Juan Capistrano, Brea and Lake Forest each cover some private trees. Irvine asks for one on old eucalyptus windrow trees. San Juan Capistrano covers front-yard and heritage trees. Brea protects natives on lots of 20,000-plus square feet. Lake Forest controls eucalyptus cutting from spring to fall. You, the owner, file any permit, so check with your city or HOA first.

In most Orange County cities, the city owns that tree, and cutting it takes city approval. Huntington Beach, Tustin and Villa Park all ask for written approval. A few towns differ. In Lake Forest, the owner next to the parkway tree looks after it. In Ladera Ranch, owners trim street trees on a LARMAC schedule but need written consent to remove one.

The answer depends on the tree and the deadline you face. Lake Forest eucalyptus is cut from November to March, since April-to-October cutting needs a permit given only for hazards. Homes on Morning Canyon or Buck Gully in Corona del Mar face a fire department deadline at the end of May. Santa Ana winds are strongest in fall, so thin heavy crowns and clear dead fronds before then.
