Tree care in Mission Viejo

Roads in the valleys, homes on the hills

Mission Viejo is a planned town built on hills once thought too steep to use. In 1960, developers saw most of this land as unbuildable. The plan that followed put the roads in the valleys and the houses on the hills. The Mission Viejo Company then planted over a million native trees and shrubs, including sycamore, California pepper and pine. It also used olives, palms and jacarandas to give streets a Spanish look. Most of the town was built by 1980, and it became a city in 1988. In 2019 a county grand jury found 47 trees for every 100 residents, the highest rate in the county.

A town that planted a million trees and shrubs now has a lot of big, mature trees to look after.

Who governs tree work in Mission Viejo

City of Mission Viejo

Tree work in Mission Viejo follows the City of Mission Viejo's rules. No one may plant, prune, remove or otherwise disturb a tree or shrub on a public street, park or other city-owned property without first getting written permission from the city forester, who must act on the request within ten working days. A tree removed with permission must be replaced within one year, inch for inch of trunk diameter; for example, one 12-inch DBH tree is replaced with six 2-inch caliper trees (Municipal Code 14.30.050). Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

What we handle

Mission Viejo slope removals, walk-clearing pruning and palm care

Supreme Tree Experts removes slope trees, lifts limbs off walks and trims palms in tree-rich Mission Viejo. When a big sycamore or pine from the first plantings needs work, it goes to Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove dead, failing or unwanted trees from Mission Viejo yards, lowering big pieces by rope where space is tight. A tree on a street, park or other city land needs the city forester's written permission first. We check who owns the tree before we quote.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

We prune yard trees here to lift limbs off sidewalks, drives and the street edge. City code calls dead or overgrown growth that hangs over a walk or blocks a driver's view a nuisance. Each cut keeps the tree's natural form.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

Once a tree is gone, we grind its stump below the soil line with our own stump grinder. Grinding past the root flare lets turf or ground cover grow back over the spot. We rake the chips out or leave them as mulch.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

We trim palms here from our lift truck, taking off dead fronds and seed pods. The town's founding plan used palms, olives and jacarandas for a Spanish look, so many palms are now tall. Skinning strips the old frond bases so the trunk looks smooth.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Call us 24/7 when a limb falls on a roof or blocks a drive in Mission Viejo. A county grand jury found 47 trees for every 100 residents here, the most per person in the county. More trees means more storm damage to clear.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Our maintenance visits check big trees near the house for dead wood, weak joins and root trouble. Many of the first plantings, like sycamores and California peppers, are now decades old and large. A yearly check catches problems before a limb fails.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower tall trees by shortening each top limb to a healthy branch lower down. The town was planned with roads in the valleys and homes on the hills. An overgrown crown can close a view, and careful reduction opens it again.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We care for larger properties on a set plan, covering every tree from the front drive to the back slope. The city's Public Services team looks after slopes along main roads, but a slope inside your lot is yours. Our plan lists each tree and its next visit.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shape shrubs and shear hedges on a set schedule so they stay dense and tidy. Bougainvillea and lantana were part of the town's original Spanish-style planting. We cut flowering shrubs back after bloom, and haul every clipping away.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan yards that use less water and suit hillside ground. The city has swapped tired slope plants along main roads for drought-tolerant shrubs and new watering systems. We follow the same idea, keeping new beds and drip lines outside big trees' root zones.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build steps, paths and low walls that hold up on sloped Mission Viejo lots. Each piece gets a compacted base and a drainage path, so runoff does not wash under it. We lay out the route around big tree roots instead of cutting through them.

FAQ

Mission Viejo tree questions, answered

Start here — these 6 cover most of what you need before booking tree work in Mission Viejo. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Yes, if it becomes a nuisance. City code lists overgrown, dead, decayed or hazardous plants as a nuisance when, for example, they block drivers' view, shelter rats, or hang over a street or sidewalk in an unsafe way. Trimming or removing the tree clears the problem.

The city does. Its Public Services team cares for landscaping in parks, medians and slopes. In 2017 it redid the slopes along Alicia Parkway with drought-tolerant shrubs, new watering systems and some tree removals, after earlier work on Marguerite Parkway. If a slope is part of your own lot, its trees are yours to maintain.

Mostly natives, plus Spanish-style accents. The Mission Viejo Company planted over a million native trees and shrubs, such as sycamore, California pepper and pine. It added olive, palm and jacaranda trees for a Spanish feel. Many of those trees are now decades old and large.

It was planted that way from the start. A 2019 county grand jury report found 47 trees for every 100 residents here, the top rate among the cities it studied. With that many mature trees, a yearly check on the big ones near your house is worth it.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Slopes behind homes, and how the crew gets gear to the tree, shape much of the cost here.

Yes, 24/7. With so many large, older trees, a heavy limb can come down at any hour. Call 877-787-7363.
