Tree care in Ladera Ranch
A cattle ranch turned into nine villages and 40,000 trees
In Ladera Ranch, the street tree in front of your house is yours to trim but not yours to remove without consent. Building began in 1999 on the O'Neill, Avery and Moiso families' cattle ranch, then the largest working ranch left in the county. Today 26,170 people live in nine villages on 4,000 acres. LARMAC's contractor looks after more than 40,000 trees and keeps 150-foot fuel breaks around the community. Owners trim these trees on a set schedule, now 2024 to 2029. Removing or moving one needs written consent from LARMAC or the ARC.
Trim it in your year. Ask before you remove it.

Who governs tree work in Ladera Ranch
Orange County (unincorporated)LARMAC (Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation) — ARC approval required
Ladera Ranch is a private master-planned community. Before any tree work, the LARMAC architectural review process applies — that is the approval a homeowner here actually needs. California Civil Code 4775 allocates maintenance responsibility between the association and the owner. Cut down and remove live trees with a valid permit or work order that has been obtained by the property owner. If you think a tree located within the County's public right of way needs trimming, please submit a service request or contact the OC Operations & Maintenance Office at (714) 955-0200. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Tree Removal

Yard trees in Ladera Ranch come down in sections, lowered on ropes between close homes. A curb tree is different, since removing or moving one needs written consent from LARMAC or the ARC. We tell you which kind you have.
Tree Trimming & Pruning

Here the owner trims the tree out front, on a LARMAC schedule that runs from 2024 to 2029. We trim yours when your area's year comes, and yard trees whenever they need it. Pines follow a separate schedule for 2025 to 2026.
Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Once a curb tree removal is approved, LARMAC's 2019 removal and replacement policy guides what goes back in. We grind the old stump low so the new tree has room. Chips are cleared from the planting spot.
Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palms are allowed here only with Spanish or Monterey home styles. On those lots, we trim dry fronds and fruit stalks and strip the old frond bases in even rings. Our lift truck reaches the tall trunks.
Emergency Tree Service

When wind drops a tree across the drive or onto the house, we come out any hour. We cut the tree free first, then chip the wood on site. Our boom trucks reach 75 feet for tall pines.
Tree Maintenance

LARMAC's contractor looks after more than 40,000 trees in the common areas. The trees inside your walls are yours to care for. A yearly check finds dead wood and weak forks before they fail over a roof, patio or path.
Tree Height Reduction

Trees that grow above your wall need ARC approval. We lower tall crowns with proper reduction cuts, never topping, so the tree keeps its form. That keeps it near the height that was signed off.
Estate Tree Care

LARMAC keeps 150-foot fuel breaks around the community for fire safety. Larger lots near the edge get a plan that keeps dead wood and dry limbs out of the trees. We check each tree in turn, season by season.
Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Our crews shear hedges and thin shrubs so dry growth does not build up in your yard. LARMAC is taking builder-planted acacia off the slopes for fire safety. In your own beds, we keep woody shrubs thin and clean.
Landscaping

The Aesthetic Standards set new tree spacing at 3 feet from property lines. Citrus needs 5 feet, and olive, jacaranda or Hong Kong orchid need 7. We plan yard beds to those numbers, with room for each crown to spread.
Hardscape

Patios and walks change your yard plan, so check the ARC's rules before building. We build them on compacted ground suited to these foothill lots. Roots of nearby trees get room so the stone stays level.

The questions worth asking any Ladera Ranch tree company

Not without written consent from LARMAC or the ARC. The Aesthetic Standards say the owner assigned to a Street Tree Area may not remove or move its trees without that consent. LARMAC also has a Homeowner Street Tree Removal and Replacement Policy, dated Nov. 13, 2019. Read it before you ask.
On LARMAC's Homeowner Street Tree Trimming Schedule, which runs from 2024 to 2029. The owner trims the tree, and the schedule shows which year your area is due. LARMAC also posts a separate pine trimming schedule for 2025 to 2026.
Only if your home is Spanish or Monterey style. The Aesthetic Standards limit palms to those two styles. New trees go at least 3 feet from property lines, citrus 5 feet, and olive, jacaranda or Hong Kong orchid 7 feet. Trees that will grow above your wall need ARC approval.
For fire safety. LARMAC works with the Orange County Fire Authority and a landscape consultant to remove acacia across the community. The builder planted it 15 to 20 years ago, and taking it out is a multi-year project paid from reserves.
Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Price here turns on tree size and whether it sits in a Street Tree Area or behind your wall.
Yes, 24/7. Santa Ana winds reach these foothills each fall, even with the fuel breaks in place. Call 877-787-7363.

Ladera Ranch runs on rules; here is how our crew meets them
Tree work goes wrong when it is rushed or under-equipped. We run our own 75-foot boom trucks, lift trucks, chippers and stump grinders, and every crew works under an ISA Certified Arborist — so the job gets done right the first time.
We hold California license #1002853 for both landscaping and tree and palm work, we are bonded, we carry general liability and every employee is on workers’ compensation.

ISA Certified Arborist
An arborist visits for free and tells you which trees sit in a Street Tree Area, which need ARC sign-off, and which are simply yours.
Licensed, Bonded & Insured
Ladera runs on rules, so check ours too: California license #1002853 in tree service and landscaping, bonded, with insurance for every crew member.
Southern California Since 1985
We started in 1985, fourteen years before the first homes rose here in 1999 on the O'Neill family's cattle ranch. The same family still runs our business.
Our Own Equipment
Our own boom trucks reach 75 feet, so tall pines and curbside trees are cut from our gear, and our chipper takes the brush away the same day.
