Tree care in Silverado

A silver camp that has lived through fire and flood

In Silverado, tree work is about wildfire, flood and steep slopes. Hunters found silver ore here in 1877, and within a week hundreds of miners came. The rush faded by 1883. Today 932 people live at 1,677 feet, at the edge of Cleveland National Forest. The 1969 flood killed eleven people. In 2020 two fires hit: the Silverado Fire in October, and the Bond Fire in December, which began in a house on Bond Way and destroyed 31 structures. Rain in 2021 then sent debris flows down the burn scar.

Up here, the tree you trim this year is wildfire safety. The dead one on the slope is flood safety.

Who governs tree work in Silverado

Orange County (unincorporated)

Silverado has no tree ordinance of its own — it is governed by Orange County (unincorporated), and that jurisdiction's rules apply here. Cut down and remove live trees with a valid permit or work order that has been obtained by the property owner. If you think a tree located within the County's public right of way needs trimming, please submit a service request or contact the OC Operations & Maintenance Office at (714) 955-0200. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Canyon removals, fire thinning and burned-stump grinding in Silverado

Supreme Tree Experts removes trees by rope, thins crowns for wildfire safety and grinds burned stumps in Silverado. After a storm sends a tree down near a cabin, residents call up Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We take trees down on steep Silverado lots in sections, roping each piece clear of cabins and the road. Live County right-of-way trees come out only when the owner holds a valid permit or work order. We tell you which trees are yours.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews thin crowns and raise low limbs so wind and flame have less to grab near the house. The October 2020 Silverado Fire ran on gusts up to 80 mph. Open crowns also shed less debris onto roofs and decks.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind the stumps left by burned trees below the soil so the ground can be replanted. The December 2020 Bond Fire began in a house nearby and destroyed 31 structures. Grinding clears the way for new growth.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

Where a palm stands by a canyon cabin, we cut its dead fronds before they drop on the roof. Dry frond bases are fuel here, so we skin them off the trunk from our lift truck. The fronds leave with us.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crew answers 24/7 when a storm drops a tree across the main road or onto a roof. After the 2020 fires, heavy rain in 2021 sent debris flows down the burn scar. We check the slope above before we start cutting.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Each year we inspect yard trees for dead wood, split trunks and old burn scars. Trees that lived through the 2020 fires may still carry hidden damage under singed bark. Catching it early lets you plan the work instead of reacting to a fall.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We shorten tall trees that hang over cabin roofs, cutting back to side limbs and never topping. The town ends at the national forest line, and trees on forest land are not yours to cut. We work only on your side of that line.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

We keep one care plan for larger hillside parcels, covering every oak and sycamore on the slope. Cost here depends on the drive up the road and how far wood must be carried. So we group the work into as few trips as we can.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

We shear shrubs near the house low and thin on a set round. This area has burned in 2007, 2014 and twice in 2020. Keeping growth sparse next to walls and decks gives embers less to catch.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan new planting that suits the area's rural feel and keeps the ground near the house lean. A county plan has guided building in these canyons since 1977, with the aim of keeping them rural. We favor wide spacing over dense beds.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We build paths and patios on a solid base and slope them so water runs away from the house. The 1969 flood killed eleven people here, a reminder of how fast water moves here. Drains stay clear of tree roots.

Yes. It began on Dec. 2, 2020, in a burning house on Bond Way. It burned 6,686 acres, destroyed 31 structures and forced 25,000 people to leave. Trees that lived through it may still carry hidden damage, so have scorched trunks checked.

Burn scars can shed mud and rock in heavy rain. On Dec. 14, 2021, officials ordered Silverado, Williams and Modjeska canyons to leave because of debris flows. Up to 7 inches of rain fell in the foothills, and firefighters rescued trapped residents.

It started on Oct. 26, 2020, near Santiago Canyon Road and Silverado Canyon Road. Gusts reached 80 mph. It burned 13,390 acres, and about 90,000 people were told to evacuate. Two firefighters were badly burned. Trees near the house that were singed that fall are worth a check now.

The U.S. Forest Service. Silverado sits at the edge of Cleveland National Forest. Trees on forest land are not the owner's to cut. If a forest tree threatens your cabin, contact the forest before any work. Trees on your own side of the line are yours to trim or remove.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Price here depends on the slope, the drive up the road and how far wood must be carried.

Yes, 24/7. Wind-driven fires and burn-scar storms have both hit this area since 2020. Call 877-787-7363.
