The little hill that stayed its own city
Lomita is named for a little hill, and it fought to stay its own small city. Nathaniel Narbonne took about 3,500 acres here when the rancho was divided in 1882, and town lots followed after 1907. In the 1930s, fields of celery and strawberries earned it the title "Celery Capital of the World." Oil came in 1923 and took about 500 acres. Lomita once spread over 7 square miles, but neighbors annexed large parts of it. In 1964, residents voted to incorporate, partly to stop more annexation and to limit high-rise apartments. Today it covers just 1.9 square miles.
In Lomita, the city trims for safety and tree health — never for the view.

Who governs tree work in Lomita
City of Lomita
Tree work in Lomita follows the city's own tree rules. Staff also responds to all parkway tree emergencies. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

The list
From pruning to stump grinding on Lomita's private yards
Supreme Tree Experts prunes, removes and grinds stumps on private Lomita lots, where the city trims its own parkway trees. City staff answer parkway emergencies, so when a yard tree falls at night, Lomita owners phone Supreme Tree Experts.
Tree Removal

We fell and haul away trees on private lots in Lomita, lowering them in pieces where space is tight. The city's Tree Maintenance Division removes parkway trees that meet its ordinance. Private trees are yours to decide on, and we handle those.
Tree Trimming & Pruning

We prune Lomita yard trees for health, clearance and the view you want. The city trims its own trees for traffic, walkers and tree health, but not for views or looks. View pruning is for private trees only.
Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

On private lots, we grind stumps out with our own stump grinders. The city clears the stumps of its own parkway trees. Once yours is gone, we rake and level the spot so it can be planted or paved.
Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

We clean palms in Lomita's yards, cutting brown fronds and flower stalks before they fall. The old boots are then stripped away, working off our lift truck, for a smooth trunk. Brush goes straight into our chipper at the curb.
Emergency Tree Service

Call our crew 24/7 if a tree falls on private land. City staff respond to parkway tree emergencies, but a tree on your lot is yours to deal with. We make it safe, day or night, and clear it.
Tree Maintenance

A yearly check from our crew keeps yard trees sound and in shape. The city trims about 600 of its own trees each year. Your yard trees need their own schedule, and an ISA Certified Arborist sets it.
Tree Height Reduction

We lower tall yard trees away from lines with proper cuts, never by topping. A branch in the power lines is a call for Southern California Edison. We stay clear of that work, as city crews do.
Estate Tree Care

Larger lots get a plan from us that sorts the work by risk and season. Each tree gets its own notes on health and access. Owners know what needs doing now and what can wait.
Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

We keep hedges and shrubs on a steady shearing schedule, so none get out of hand. We reach them through side yards, over walls or from the street, whichever way the lot allows. Clippings go straight through our chipper.
Landscaping

We keep new trees clear of overhead lines whenever we plan a yard. The city picks parkway trees from a palette that weighs lines and variety. We copy that thinking and pick trees whose full height stays well below the wires.
Hardscape

We lay paths, patios and low garden walls sized for a compact lot. We map tree roots before digging, since cutting a big root can harm the tree. Paving that curves around roots stays level longer.

Before you book in Lomita
6 questions worth having answered before you book tree work in Lomita. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.
No. The Tree Maintenance Division trims city trees for traffic and pedestrian clearance and for the tree's health. It does not trim for views or looks. About 600 city trees are trimmed each year. To ask about yours, call 310-325-7110, ext. 155, or send an online request.
Southern California Edison. Lomita's staff refer power-line conflicts to Edison, because city crews are not trained or equipped for that work. Stay well clear of the branch and the lines, and never try to clear it yourself. For a tree in your own yard that is growing toward lines, call Edison too before any work.
The city, if the tree meets its tree ordinance. The Tree Maintenance Division removes trees that meet the ordinance's criteria, and it removes stumps too. A tree on your side of the property line is your job to deal with.
From an approved tree palette. A certified arborist helps the city choose it, and staff weigh overhead utility lines and species variety. If you are planting in your own yard near lines, the same thinking is worth copying: pick a tree whose full height stays well below the wires.
Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Here, how the crew reaches the tree — through a side yard, over a wall or from the street — shapes most of the cost.
Yes, 24/7. The city answers parkway tree emergencies itself; a tree that falls on private land is the owner's to deal with, day or night. Call 877-787-7363.
