Tree care in Redondo Beach

A beach town with a round name

Redondo Beach is one of the oldest cities in the South Bay, and its name is older still. It became a city on April 29, 1892, and took its name from Rancho Sausal Redondo — redondo means round. By 1905, Henry Huntington owned 90 percent of it. The pier took hard hits in 1988: two winter storms, then a fire on May 27 that burned it to the waterline. The concrete pier was finished in 1995. Today about 71,500 people share 6.2 square miles, with some 14,000 city trees of more than 220 species along the streets and in the parks.

In Redondo Beach, the parkway tree is the city's, but the strip it grows in is yours to keep up.

Who governs tree work in Redondo Beach

City of Redondo Beach

Tree work in Redondo Beach follows the City of Redondo Beach's rules. Parks Maintenance runs the pruning schedule for about 14,000 City street and park trees: the city is split into four grids and one grid is trimmed each fiscal year, and new parkway trees come from the List of Approved City Trees. Rules change. Confirm current requirements with the jurisdiction before work begins — filing a permit is the property owner's responsibility, not ours.

Services

Light pruning, stump grinding and palms for Redondo Beach yards

Supreme Tree Experts prunes, removes and trims palms on Redondo Beach lots, where an unapproved city-tree cut costs $15,000-plus. Before any cut near the parkway, Redondo Beach owners learn whose tree it is from Supreme Tree Experts.

  • Tree Removal

Tree removal: trunk cut into log rounds

We remove yard trees in Redondo Beach, but first we confirm the tree is not the city's. Cutting a street tree without approval brings a fine of at least $15,000, plus five 24-inch box trees. The lot line decides who does the work.

  • Tree Trimming & Pruning

Tree trimming crew with a chipper truck

Our crews prune yard trees with light cuts, never lion's tailing or leaving stubs. The city bans both on its public trees, along with taking more than a quarter of the foliage. We hold your trees to that same line.

  • Stump Grinding & Stump Removal

Stump grinding with a Vermeer grinder

We grind stumps in tight back yards, where homes sit close on small lots. About 11,500 people live in each square mile here, so crew access often sets the plan. Our grinders go below grade so turf or a new tree can follow.

  • Palm Tree Trimming & Skinning

Palm trimming from a lift truck

Near the shore, our crews cut dead fronds and old seed stalks before they drop on walks and drives. Skinning then takes the old frond bases off, leaving a smooth trunk. Tall ones by the beach are worked from our palm lift truck.

  • Emergency Tree Service

Emergency call-out: uprooted tree on a hillside

Our crews take calls 24/7 when a yard tree splits or lands on a roof. After hours, the city routes fallen public trees through police dispatch instead. If the tree grew on your side of the line, we are the ones to call.

  • Tree Maintenance

Tree maintenance on a mature olive tree

Our crew checks yard trees yearly for dead wood and weak forks, on a schedule set for your lot. City street trees here wait about four years between trims. Catching a problem early keeps a small job small.

  • Tree Height Reduction

Tree height reduction from a boom truck

We lower tall yard trees that crowd a roof or a view, cutting back to strong side limbs. The city does not remove healthy public trees for views or leaf litter. On your own lot, a crown reduction is the usual fix.

  • Estate Tree Care

Estate tree care for mature sycamores

For larger lots with many trees, we build one plan and work it tree by tree in order of risk. The city grows more than 220 species on its streets and in its parks, and yards are just as mixed. Each kind is pruned for the way it grows.

  • Tree Shaping & Shrub Shearing

Hedge shearing from a boom truck

Our crew shears hedges and shapes shrubs so walks, drives and side yards stay clear. A hedge keeps its crisp line best with regular shearing through the growing season. Clippings go through our chipper and leave with the crew.

  • Landscaping

Landscaped garden with a stone waterfall

We plan planting for compact coastal yards, with plants sized to the space you have. The city plants about 100 new street trees a year from its approved list. A new parkway tree needs city approval and a pick from that list first.

  • Hardscape

Hardscape patio with a stone fire table

We set paths, patios and edging on a firm base, back from big roots. Keeping up the sidewalk and parkway beside your home is your job here, though the parkway tree is not. We build around that tree, never through its roots.

FAQ

The questions worth asking any Redondo Beach tree company

6 of them, answered here for Redondo Beach. If yours is not here, call 877-787-7363 and ask.

Only with the city's OK. You file a Tree Removal Application, and the Urban Forestry Manager reviews it case by case. A street tree comes out only if it is sick past saving, has damaged public property, is a hazard that cannot be fixed, or blocks development with no other option. Removing one without approval brings a fine of at least $15,000, plus five 24-inch box trees.

No. The city says healthy public trees are not removed for view preservation or leaf litter. Its code also bans severe pruning of public trees: topping, lion's tailing, leaving stubs, or taking more than a quarter of the foliage. If a city tree truly looks unsafe, report it to Public Works.

About every four years. If you want a city tree trimmed sooner, the Resident Request Pruning Program offers out-of-cycle trimming at set rates. The city also aims to plant about 100 new trees a year, picked from its approved street tree list.

You do — but not the tree. The city owns and manages parkway trees. Keeping up the sidewalk and parkway area next to your home is the adjacent owner's job. If you want to plant a new parkway tree, get city approval and pick from the approved list first.

Yes — $600 for tree services, wherever the job is. Redondo Beach packs about 11,500 people into each square mile, so crew access to a back yard often shapes the cost.

Yes, 24/7. For a fallen city tree after hours, the city routes calls through police dispatch at (310) 379-5411; for a tree on your lot, call us. Call 877-787-7363.
